The Western Institute for Advanced Study is dedicated to solving intractable problems in science, for the greater benefit of humanity. We foster a highly interdisciplinary and open atmosphere to promote intellectual progress, and right now we are seeking your support for fundamental scientific research. Each year, we issue a new Grand Challenge in mathematics, physics, or the biological sciences – or at the intersection of these fields. We then recruit talented research fellows who are highly motivated and well-equipped to pursue the research question. Fellows are given support to pursue solutions to the annual Grand Challenge, using their own methodology and working in collaboration with other researchers who have complementary expertise. Our overall goal is to facilitate discovery by exploring the uncharted territory between established fields. Studies undergo an extensive peer-review process and then are made freely available to the public through open-access publication.Last year, we completed our first Grand Challenge. We took established mathematical toolkits from computational physics and applied them to a fundamental neuroscientific problem. This approach was enormously successful - allowing us to explain how perceptual information content and non-deterministic outcomes emerge from neural activity in the brain, but not from spinal reflex circuits. We have now made the results available for peer review by the scientific community, and initiated collaborations that will begin to formally evaluate this new theoretical framework.Next year, the goal of our Grand Challenge is to create a generalized theoretical framework for ambient-temperature quantum computation, inspired by the structure and operation of natural systems. We’re asking for your support as we lay the scientific groundwork for the technologies of tomorrow.
