Dear Sam Jam and Kanawana Community,  As many of you know, the Sam Jam and Sam Lazarus Fund were created over 17 years ago in memory of Sam Lazarus, who died very young working as a childcare worker in Ghana, Africa. His years at Camp YMCA Kanawana gave him a sense of purpose and his family wanted his legacy to live on through camperships offered to kids who would otherwise not be able to afford camp.  For the past 17 years, dozens of families have been offered camperships for their children—kids from all walks of life, with different challenges, and from many different countries. Not only have the recipient children benefitted from the experience, but the camp has become more inclusive as a result. Because of COVID-19, the last few years have taken a toll on Camp YMCA Kanawana. For two years, there were no campers and no revenue even for upkeep. Finally this year, camp reopened but events made it challenging: a huge spring storm destroyed multiple tents and a building, and a COVID outbreak forced the closure of the camp for five days. Both these events required increasing camp fees and lowering occupancy rates. We are now asking for your help to revitalize the camp and keep Sam’s legacy alive. Chère communauté du Sam Jam et de Kanawana,  Comme beaucoup d’entre vous le savent, l’évènement Sam Jam et le Fonds Sam Lazarus ont été créés il y a 17 ans en mémoire de Sam Lazarus. Sam est décédé très jeune alors qu’il travaillait dans une garderie au Ghana, en Afrique. Ses années au Camp YMCA Kanawana ont donné un sens à sa vie, c’est pourquoi sa famille voulait que son héritage se perpétue en permettant d’offrir une aide financière aux jeunes qui ne pourraient autrement pas assumer le coût du camp.  Depuis 17 ans, des dizaines de familles ont reçu de l’aide financière pour que leurs enfants puissent aller au camp — des jeunes de tous les horizons faisant face à des défis divers et venant de nombreux pays différents. En plus de permettre aux enfants ayant reçu cette aide de bénéficier de l’expérience de camp, cela a également permis de rendre le camp plus inclusif. À cause de la COVID-19, ces dernières années ont eu des effets ravageurs sur le Camp YMCA Kanawana. Pendant deux ans, le camp n’a accueilli aucun campeur ni campeuse et n’a perçu aucun revenu, pas même pour veiller à son entretien. Finalement le camp a pu rouvrir ses portes cette année, mais la saison n’a pas été de tout repos : une énorme tempête a détruit plusieurs tentes et un bâtiment au printemps et nous avons dû fermer le camp pendant cinq jours en raison d’une épidémie de COVID-19. Ces deux évènements ont engendré l’augmentation du coût du camp et la baisse du taux d’occupation. On vous demande aujourd’hui de nous aider à revitaliser le camp et à faire vivre l’esprit de Sam.
