Established in 1924, during the Great Migration of African Americans to northern states and the oppressive reign of Jim Crow in the South, Phyllis Wheatley House emerged as part of the Settlement House Movement. In a deeply segregated United States, the organization’s original mission was to provide a safe place where Black individuals could lodge while traveling or attending the university.  It didn’t take long, however, for the purpose of Phyllis Wheatley House to expand to meet the broader needs of the North Minneapolis community. It became a hub where people could access classes, job skills training, childcare, and vital resources. It was also a space where African Americans could gather with others who shared their experiences, organize and advocate for change, celebrate their culture, and build a thriving community—a community that continues to flourish generations later.  Over the years, the agency has evolved alongside the people it serves, addressing challenges such as poverty, violence, family instability, geographic isolation, and systemic marginalization. These challenges—rooted in decades of racist policies, redlining, and urban planning decisions—fragmented what was once a close-knit, accessible community. Yet, even today, the sense of unity endures. It’s evident in casual gatherings, resource fairs, neighborhoods, and within the walls of Phyllis Wheatley Community Center.  Our mission is to uplift this community, composed of fearless, resilient, and tenacious individuals who have persevered through racial persecution, banded together in the face of deep adversity, and celebrated moments of triumph and hope. By equipping individuals and families with the tools they need—support for academic success, job skills training for greater opportunities, and the confidence to dream boldly and pursue those dreams—we are creating pathways for people to discover their strengths and take control of their futures.  Your support of Phyllis Wheatley’s Centennial Fund will help us build a stronger, more vibrant future for the community we serve. Donations will empower us to expand our youth development programs, providing young people with the skills, mentorship, and opportunities they need to thrive. We will invest in community wealth-building initiatives, equipping families with tools and resources to achieve financial stability and long-term prosperity. Additionally, funds will support the restoration of Camp Katharine Parsons, our historic youth camp, ensuring its legacy as a place where children and families can access outdoor spaces, foster connections with nature, and promote outdoor equity.
