At one point early on in the pandemic, several Black and Brown communities suffered the highest number of infections and deaths in the entire state of Illinois. It was not only the virulence of the virus that caused such devastation, but the fact that so many of those who were impacted lacked adequate healthcare for chronic diseases therefore placing them at highest risk.  Since its inception, Salaam Community Wellness Center has forged a new path to addressing these inequities and disparities. We see ourselves as a "healthcare movement" dedicated to changing the broken U.S. healthcare system, one patient at a time.  Salaam Community Wellness Center has developed a number of service offerings and programs that engage many low-income individuals and families. In addition to the conventional model of physical and mental services, we offer alternative and complementary therapies such as deep-breathing/meditation, yoga, acupuncture, massage therapy, Reiki, music therapy and more.  We not only address the physical needs of individuals but the critical high priority social service ones. Over the past three years we have sponsored winter wear giveaways providing coats, scarves, gloves, hats and socks along with blankets for children and adults. This year we have distributed 100's of pounds of fresh produce and 200 turkeys. Just a few days ago on December 28, 2024, we distributed over 200 winter kits,  blankets, and clothing to our neighbors in need. June 2024 we launched our inaugural "Peace of Mind" Integrative Health & Wellness Pop-up bringing social services, health and healthcare resources to the community. We've conducted an annual Integrative Health & Wellness Expo, which has exposed attendees to alternative healing methods for acute and chronic diseases. Established in 2021 to address the wide-spread problem of "food deserts" or "food apartheid", Salaam Community Wellness Center opened an organic "Paradise Garden" on two formerly blighted vacant lots on its campus. This year, the garden produced over 35 varieties of organic fruits, vegetables, herbs and flowers. These items were distributed to community members, many of whom had little or no access to affordable healthy foods. Our organization works in collaboration with other organizations which have similar and complementary missions. Through our partnership with Entrepreneurs Academy, we are able to provide on-site classes in drone photography and organic farming. These are areas that prepare individuals for jobs and entrepreneurial ventures. We also partnered with TMH Behavioral Services by hosting a bi-monthly Black men's therapy/support group. This is much needed in our area as it has been designated as one of the highest violent crime districts in the city of Chicago. We need your help to continue doing this much needed work. Your funds will be used for general operating expenses and to supplement the direct service costs for patient care. Although Salaam Community Wellness Center receives reimbursements from insurance companies that ONLY covers 25-30% of the actual cost for patient care services.
