The Mountain Counties Water Resources Association (MCWRA) is pleased to launch a reimagined MCWRA Regional Roundtable Luncheon series, designed specifically for General Managers and senior staff from our member agencies.These invitation-focused gatherings will bring together regional water leaders for focused conversations on the most pressing issues facing Sierra Nevada water agencies, while also creating space for candid discussion, collaboration, and relationship-building among peers. Each Roundtable will include a lunch, and feature a brief technical case study highlighting infrastructure challenges, innovative solutions, and lessons learned that are directly relevant to mountain water systems. The Marlette Lake Dam is a large, high-hazard earthen embankment dam located on the east side of the Lake Tahoe basin at approximately 7,900 ft ASML (1,500 ft above Lake Tahoe) and is only accessible via a steep and sandy six-mile-long forest service road. The Dam was originally constructed 150 years ago during the days of the Comstock Lode to form a 12,000 ac-ft reservoir that supplies water to Virginia City, Gold Hill, Silver City, and (more recently) Carson City as part of the Marlette Lake Water System. Despite historic and ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the Dam, it has deteriorated over the course of its life and much of its infrastructure is nearing or past end-of-life. Nevada State Public Works, who owns and operates the Dam, initiated a collaborative delivery contract with Lumos &amp; Associates as the engineer and Granite Construction as the CMAR to streamline the design and construction process for this locationally challenged dam. Throughout the design process, Lumos and Granite worked closely together to navigate significant design challenges and come up with a cost-effective rehabilitation design that could be constructed in the five-month construction window. At the time of the presentation, the first season of construction was completed and the major milestone of excavating and reconstructing the Dam was achieved. The second construction season (in 2026) will wrap up ancillary items, such as the construction of a control building on dam crest and reconstruction of the emergency spillway.
