This is a violin made by John Summers in 1965. Summers was a wonderful fiddle player based in Indiana. There was an album of his playing recorded by Art Rosenbaum in the '60s for Folkways (a sample: https://folkways.si.edu/john-w-summers/fine-times-at-our-house/old-time/music/track/smithsonian). The fiddle is in near new condition and is set up to play well. There are no cracks or other damage. Others who have owned fiddles that Summers made include Mike Seeger, Allice Gerard, and Rafe Stefanini.
Estimated Value: $2500. Donated by Tony Marcus

This is a Norwegian Hardangerfele, a fiddle with sympathetic strings used in traditional music of Norway. It's signed Hans Nielsen 1983 on the inside back. It appears to have never been completely finished, as there is no bridge or soundpost, and the end pin hasn't been fit to its hole. This one is made with 9 pegs, so four regular strings and five sympathetic ones which would pass under the fingerboard and through the middle of the bridge.
Estimated Value: $200. Donated by Tony Marcus

You are invited on our private trip down the Lower Salmon river in Idaho. Five days of glorious canyons, fun rapids, sandy beaches, and good company! I used to be a commercial river guide, have run this section upwards of 100 times; it’s a beautiful trip.
A few things to consider:
This is a wilderness trip: no phone, no access - once you’re in, you’re in.
The dates are: stage in Moscow Idaho Tuesday, July 28, camp at the put in near Whitebird Wednesday July 29, launch the morning of July 30, off the river and back to Moscow Monday August 3. You must be able to swim!
You can take an inflatable kayak, or sit on a raft, or do a bit of both. We have a VERY expert kayak leader, and that gives you a bit more to do than just sit.
The rapids are mostly Class III, one Class IV that we scout. But all the rapids are “pool-drop” so even if you fall out of your kayak, no worries, we just pick you up at the bottom. My nieces and nephews have run it numerous times in the kayaks, starting age 13. It’s fun!
You will need to participate in rigging, de-rigging, and basic camp cores - again, this is not an outfitter trip, so everyone pitches in! For instance, everyone has kitchen duty one night; but then you’re off the other nights
We can get for you a life jacket, a helmet (if you’re kayaking), a dry bag, even a tent and other camping gear, so don’t worry if you don’t have gear.
Saved the best for last - you pee in the river, and poop in a bucket which we pack out with us.
Oh, and we are, of course, musicians, so, yeah, there’s a bit of joyful noise in camp at night, which we hope you’ll contribute to!
An outfitted trip on this stretch costs $2000 per person. If you want to bring a second person, arrangements can be made.
If you have additional questions, or are looking for more information, please find Lisa Lombardi during fiddle week and she'll be happy to answer your questions.
