Iranians have been bravely protesting across the country for more than two months now, defying a deadly and brutal crackdown by the Islamic Regime. The protests were sparked by the death of a young woman, Mahsa Amini, who was killed in custody of the so-called Morality Police for violating Iran’s discriminatory rules forcing women to cover their hair with a hijab (headscarf). Women and school-aged girls have been at the forefront of the demonstrations, protesting the strict control over women’s freedom of choice by removing and burning their hijabs or cutting their hair, while chanting “Women, Life, Freedom” – the slogan of the revolution. Although these new demonstrations have taken the women’s movement in Iran to an unprecedented level, Iranian women have been demanding justice, reform, and equal rights for decades.With the waves of disinformation l dominating social and conventional media channels, it is important for the Canadian public to receive accurate information about this decisive moment in the modern history of Iran and the Iranian women’s movement. In fact, the impact of this “first feminine revolution” extends beyond the borders of Iran and merits a closer look.
