When we talk about our rescue dogs needing expensive dental surgeries, often there’s people who are quite surprised by this! It’s not something that everyone is aware that dogs require. But, it is incredibly important.  If you’ve ever had a toothache/cavity, you know how annoying that throbbing or sharp pain in your mouth can be when you’re trying to do basic things like eat or even drink cool water. Now imagine a mouth full of rotten teeth—that’s certainly going to be painful. Not only is having ongoing dental disease painful for dogs, it can impact their lifespan as the bacteria from the teeth are released into the body when they swallow which impacts their liver and kidney function.  When we take in rescue dogs that have been used for breeding, they often have a full mouth of dental disease and rotten teeth at a young age. This happens for several reasons. All breeds can suffer from dental disease when living in certain conditions and breeding dogs are particularly prone to these issues. Without things to chew in the breeding kennel environment, dogs have no way to naturally clean their teeth. They also have multiple litters of puppies which requires a lot of calcium to produce milk, which means they have less calcium available for their teeth. This can lead to dogs as young as 3 years old needing full dental surgeries.  As a rescue that takes retired breeding dogs, dental surgery is the biggest cost that we take on on a regular basis. A full dental can cost anywhere from $600-$2000 depending on how many extractions are needed and how much cleaning is required. But, it gives these dogs that have been living in pain a much better quality of life and stops the bacteria that can impact their organs—so it is 100% worth it! Unfortunately, we are often asked to take dogs with severe dental disease that are otherwise going to be put down and the cost of treating these dogs means we have to say no. We hate saying no to any dog in need, so by creating a dental fund we hope to have some money set aside to take in these dog and get them the vet care they require.  Would you like to help us be able to say ‘yes’ to helping dogs with dental issues? Every bit helps us to work towards our goal. We have set the goal at $10,000 which will allow us to take in 7-10 more dogs that need dental surgeries. Donation can also be sent by e-transfer to <a href="mailto:k9safespace@gmail.com">k9safespace@gmail.com</a> OR message us to arrange a direct donation to our vet clinic.  (Please note: K9 Safe Space is registered Not For Profit but is not yet registered as a charity.
