The Vancouver Island University (VIU) Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) fourth-year students are doing a field school in the heart of Mexico as part of their global engagement class. A group of 8 nursing students, supported by two nursing faculty, will embark on a three-week immersive experience within the city of San Miguel de Allende and surrounding communities. They are also partnered with a non-governmental organization called Apoyo a Gente Emprendedora. They plan to work primarily with women and children to educate, promote health initiatives, and explore similarities and differences in the health care system.  They are raising money to donate to the organization Apoyo, which focuses on teaching women how to start their own businesses to bootstrap themselves out of poverty and sustainably support their community and family. In addition, they hope to cover some of the travel and accommodation costs while there. The Global Engagement team is putting on a couple of local fundraising events to bring students and local community members together and educate them on the importance of expanding our worldview and cultural safety. Since not everyone can participate in these local fundraisers, they provide an easy way to receive donations.
