Cameras For Girls pursues Women's Empowerment and Gender Equality in Africa using photography as our catalyst. We provide women who face gender-based barriers to employment with a camera to keep and a 4-phase photography and business-skills curriculum to support their goals of becoming paid journalists and photographers in male-dominated spaces. Our students learn to capture their world with their new cameras, giving young women the confidence to work with recognized skills that immediately improve their options, reduce gender inequality and fight poverty. In Africa, where women encounter restricted opportunities due to cultural biases, systemic barriers, and harassment, the impact is profound. This issue is evident in Uganda's journalism sector, where less than 20% of journalists are female and face a gender pay gap of 17-35% less than their male counterparts.  Cameras For Girls gets cameras into the hands of young women and teaches them photography and business skills through our hybrid in-person and online 4-phase program. We partner with local universities in Uganda to help us recruit our students. How Our Program Works: Phase 1 is a 4-day intensive workshop in Uganda. We give each girl a camera to keep (valued at $600 CAD) and teach her how to use it, going from basic to manual in just three days. On the 4th day, we work with a local NGO so that the girls get field practice, learning how to build a story from the ground up. In return for providing us access, the NGO receives completed stories and photos they can use in marketing. The girls get their first published piece they can add to their portfolio. Phase 2 starts two weeks after the founder and executive director, Amina Mohamed, returns home to Canada. She continues the training by teaching via Zoom every week. She provides monthly assignments, and the students can access an online purpose-built photography training built to serve not only the girls and women in the journalism program, but girls and women across Africa, in remote areas who want the chance to tell their story. It allows the girls to learn at their convenience and alleviates any issues they may experience due to data restrictions. Phase 3 assists the girls in building a resume and Linkedin profile. Amina also teaches business skills, such as making a business plan, budgeting, etc.  Phase 4 is a 6-month mentorship program that assists those females who could not attain employment during the course to work with a volunteer mentor on their specific goals. About Amina, The Founder/Executive Director:Having had a successful career in film and television, Amina was inspired to tell stories of others impacted by injustice. She founded Cameras For Girls to address the realities of life for girls and women living in poverty in Africa. Through the use of photography and the power of storytelling, she empowers young girls and women to use their voices to escape gender-based violence and poverty while combatting gender inequality. What We Have Accomplished So Far:Thus far, we have taught photography and business skills to 64 women in Uganda between ages 19 and 29, working hard to become journalists and photographers in male-dominated spaces. We proudly report that 72% of these girls now have full-time jobs as journalists, photojournalists, or photographers; some even work in communications. In November 2023, we will embark on our first workshop in Tanzania, teaching another 15 girls from the University of Dar es Salaam's journalism and communications program.
