Queen’s Project on International Development (QPID) is honoured to host our annual Collecting with QPID (CwQ) campaign in support of the Kingston Youth Shelter! The campaign will be taking place from March 6th to March 10th, 2023 and we hope you will help us achieve our goal of $10,000 this year! In Kingston and area, 1 in 3 homeless persons is a youth. The Kingston Youth Shelter provides emergency shelter, transitional housing, and family mediation services for homeless youth in the Kingston area. The shelter offers a safe environment with nutritious food, counselling, support and life skills training. The shelter has experienced a significant increase in demand for their services, however they have also experienced a substantial loss of funding this year, impeding their ability to provide essential services to homeless youth in our community. Each year, the Kingston Youth Shelter offers assistance to approximately 200 youth through a variety of programs – each with a different means of accomplishing the same goal: ensuring homeless youth do not become homeless adults. In May 2021, the shelter moved to a larger location, which was crucial for continuing to provide services to youth while complying with mandatory social distancing regulations. Currently, they have the capacity to hold around 30 youths per night, in addition to supporting a number of families with small children in temporary housing arrangements. The Kingston Youth Shelter’s transitional housing program provides long-term shelter, support, and guidance to homeless youth. The shelter is currently operating two transitional homes with a total of 11 beds. The program offers supportive housing with affordable rent and focuses on teaching the life skills required to permanently transition out of homelessness into happy and healthy lives. At Kingston Youth Shelter, homeless does not mean hopeless. Historically, Kingston has experienced higher rates of youth homelessness and female youth homelessness in comparison to the national average. QPID understands the need to address the prevalence of youth homelessness in order to improve overall community and health status. Improving our community means we need to ensure we take care of those who share it with us. QPID supports the Kingston Youth Shelter by fundraising and providing education on youth homelessness. <hr /> FAQ Where will the donations go?:100% of the proceeds from this year’s campaign with continue to support the Kingston Youth Shelter, as they have lost major funding from various donors while incurring new expenses for necessary items such as PPE and increasing operational costs. In the past, money raised has been used to increase the number of beds in transition homes, create a study space for the students to stay engaged in their studies, and to build an industrial kitchen to teach important life skills surrounding food preparation and food safety.  Each of these projects has been driven by youth and youth shelter workers, with funding coming directly from our organization. The projects have also been highly successful - after the installation of the study space, many students involved in the transitional housing program have since gone off to attain post-secondary education and are now self-sustaining individuals. In the fall of 2020, QPID collected 36,000 masks to donate to the shelter for pandemic relief. QPID is one of Kingston Youth Shelter’s largest donors, and they rely on our yearly campaign to fund many projects that cannot be funded with their regular budget, especially since the pandemic.
