One day Micaela Archer-Shee was teaching a ballet class at her school, <a href="https://coastaldance.ca/" target="_blank">Coastal Dance</a>, when the pain came. Then, in the next few weeks, the tiredness, the cramping and the backache…and the worry. Micaela went, in pain, to the duty doctor and was sent immediately to emergency for a check. Gallbladder? Gallstones? The diagnosis of pancreatic cancer was very quick and efficient as was the health care system. Three weeks later, Micaela had undergone the Whipple procedure and was scheduled for Chemo (12 rounds of Folfox).</div> Micaela had to inform the parents of her students of her condition, the response was universal dismay. Then everyone rallied. Teachers of her studio gave their time to clear her schedule, parents organised a food train to help with her family's needs. Dancers and their parents sent thoughtful cards and gifts. She was offered support at every turn, even from other dance schools. But what was needed was more information. The diagnosis of pancreatic cancer carried such negativity that at first, all elements of her life seemed without much hope. Except that Micaela is unfailingly positive. And so was her surgeon, her oncologist, the nurses on the chemo ward, her family and her dance family. And that is Micaela's goal now. To celebrate her life and to support the spread of information…and of hope… about a less well known cancer.
