Commissioning of our Reduced Cost Veterinary Clinic
In 2021, SPCA West is taking a big step forward, and we need you to get there.
This year, we are putting forward an ambitious project that will directly help the community and its citizens, as well as produce a huge impact on the number of non-sterilized animals that are among us.
This will request significant investments but will quickly produce positive results with major positive impact for all.
Everyday thousands of animals enter Quebec’s shelters. The reasons abound, the result is the same: Overpopulation is everywhere and is largely responsible for these animals that are left to themselves.
The majority enter the shelters non-sterilized (9 out of 10) and come from an unwanted litter that could have been avoided if access to reasonably priced veterinary care had been available to the owners.
Fact: It has often been demonstrated through several studies that voluntary sterilization of owner-owned pets is the only method of population control that has proven effective in the long term to significantly reduce the number of animals that enter shelters
Fact: In Quebec, no more than 7% of subsidized sterilization programs exist in communities (Source: CFHS, and Nanos Research), which leaves the vast majority of our communities to themselves and pet owners with no resources to sterilize their furry friend.
Fact: An Internal Veterinary Clinic in a shelter subsidized by its supporters allows it to save a lot of costs compared to the use of external clinics (Reduction of expenses of more than 60%) and moreover this type of internal clinic allows the shelter a much faster reaction time, thus saving more lives more efficiently on a 24 /7 basis.
Fact: Demand for such services is constant and growing every day
The objective of the targeted animal sterilization program is to reduce:
a) Number of stray and/or abandoned and unwanted dogs and cats
b) Number of dog and cat uselessly euthanized
c) Dog Bites and Aggression
d) The number of feral cats, abandoned and hit by cars on our roads
e) Public health and safety hazards caused by rabies and other zoonotic diseases
f) The cost to communities for animal control services
g) calls to the police for animal causing problems or that are abandoned or found stray
As a result, our new accessible sterilization programs will be highly cost-effective and become a recognized tools for achieving the following positive outcomes:
• lower level of pet overpopulation
• decreased levels of non-necessary euthanasia
• decreased number of animals admitted to shelters
• fewer stray and feral cats and dogs
• reduced animal complaints
• reduced risk of transmission of communicable diseases from animals to humans
• increasing the total level of sterilized animals in the community
• increasing adoptions.
Providing subsidized sterilization services to low-income individuals who would not likely be able to have their pet sterilized otherwise addresses a clearly identified need and an ever-increasing demand
