Dear friends of the Roulant, From the Plateau to Senneville, the first dusting of snow is settling over once thriving gardens and fields. Snowflakes cover the young trees that we planted this summer as part of the biodiversity project, blanket the soil from which lettuce, squash, and beets were harvested just a few weeks ago, and drift alongside the courageous Meals-on-Wheels volunteers on their way to the front doors of fellow Montrealers.  The silence settles peacefully in our gardens, but screams the urgency to plan for 2023.  No rest for the weary There is no winter break for the Roulant’s farmers. Harvest plans need to be prepared for the new year, seed orders placed, broken things repaired, and funding applications written to guarantee essential salaries.  Community workers are likewise offered little respite from winter. The urgency of social service can't wait for innovative farm networks, like the one we’re engaged with this year, to provide healthy equitable food to everyone. The Meals-on-Wheels and the distribution of free frozen meals must roll on. From the backburner to the front Achieving balance between social service and social change is our greatest challenge. On the one hand, we have made financial decisions that allow us to move our projects forward, despite the squeeze this puts on our budget. This year, we welcomed Adrienne in a new permanent position dedicated to the Agroeducational Centre and the overall accessibility of our agriculture programming. On the other, we must meet the needs of the community that skyrocketed after 2020. We currently have the capacity to accept only 23% of the Meals-on-Wheels service requests we receive. The volume of requests has increased by 15% in 2022.  These figures are revealing and worrying. We should never settle for either-or Now, more than ever, individuals in our community living in financial precarity are having to choose between what is healthy and what is inexpensive, as inflation impacts their ability to age with grace at home.  It’s a heartbreaking choice. “Without your help, I would be eating canned food and would have lost my faith in the community. It’s hard to explain - the energy that your volunteers exude is so genuinely positive and makes me feel deeply cared for. Chèr.es proches du Roulant,  Du Plateau à Senneville, les premiers filets de neige enveloppent les jeunes arbres que nous avons plantés cet été à la ferme, couvrent les parcelles de terre d’où jaillissaient les laitues, les courges ou les betteraves il y a encore quelques semaines, et accompagnent les courageux bénévoles de popote en livraisons dans les rues et ruelles de Montréal.  Le silence s’installe paisiblement dans nos jardins, et nous hurle l’urgence de planifier 2023.  Au four et au moulin  Il n’y pas de répit hivernal pour les fermières. Les menus et plans de récolte doivent être établis avant la nouvelle année, les commandes de semences doivent être passées, les bris doivent être réparés, les infrastructures doivent être améliorées, les demandes de financement doivent être rédigées.   Il n’y a guère plus de répit hivernal pour les travailleurs communautaires. L’agriculture solidaire de proximité pour laquelle nous œuvrons n’est pas encore capable de combler l’urgence des besoins en services sociaux alimentaires. La popote roulante et les repas congelés gratuits du Roulant seront ainsi livrés cet hiver sans discontinuer.  Passage à l’action  Naviguer la tension qu’il peut y avoir entre servir ses membres en nourriture au quotidien et changer les systèmes alimentaires pour un futur plus nourricier est le plus grand défi du Roulant.   Nous avons dernièrement pris des décisions financières osées qui nous permettent de faire progresser nos projets. Adrienne a ainsi rejoint l’équipe dans un poste dédié au centre agro-éducatif que nous planifions bâtir à la ferme, et à l’accessibilité de l’agriculture en général.  Mais nous devons tout autant investir dans les besoins de la communauté qui ont explosé depuis 2020. Nous n’avons pour le moment la capacité d'accepter que 23% des demandes de service de popote que nous recevons. Celles-ci ont d’ailleurs augmenté de 15% en 2022.  Des chiffres révélateurs, préoccupants.    L’un ou l’autre  Aujourd’hui, plus que jamais, les membres de notre communauté faisant face à des enjeux financiers doivent choisir entre le santé ou l’abordable, l’inflation spectaculaire des derniers mois, ayant érodé leur capacité à bien se nourrir.  C’est un choix que personne ne devrait avoir à faire.  “Sans votre aide, je ne mangerais que des conserves et j'aurais perdu ma foi en l’esprit de communauté.
