Dear Friends, In 2019, Maureen—affectionately known as Moe—became one of the first recipients of a fully funded service dog through Veterans and Everyday Heroes. That dog was Hairy, a devoted Seizure Alert Service Dog whose loyalty and training quite literally saved Moe’s life more times than we’ll ever know. Hairy wasn’t just a service dog. He was Moe’s guardian, her constant companion, and her quiet strength through some of life’s most difficult moments. With unwavering purpose, he stood by her side, alert to every shift, every signal that could lead to a seizure. He would then alert help through a phone button on her wall.  Earlier this year, Moe faced a heartbreaking decision. As cancer took its toll on Hairy, she chose to end his suffering with the same love and courage that had defined their bond. He was only seven years old. Letting him go was one of the most painful days of her life. But Moe’s resilience is as remarkable as her heart. Knowing firsthand the life-saving impact of a service dog, she reached out once more—this time, not to replace Hairy, but to honor him by continuing the journey they began together. Thanks to our trusted partner, Searchlight Service Dogs, a new companion named Bunny has been training to step into that sacred role. Bunny is nearly ready to bring Moe the safety, independence, and peace of mind she so deeply deserves.
