Many of the local sexual assault agencies struggle with the high costs of maintaining a dedicated free 24/7 crisis support system, which includes technology and communication costs, system maintenance, application fees, volunteer recruitment, onboarding and training, and 24/7 volunteer oversight. The cost of running an internal dedicated crisis line can reach up to $40,000 per year per agency, making it financially unsustainable for some sexual assault centres to provide services during weekends or holidays—times when incidents of sexual assault and exploitation are often at their highest and demand for service is at its most. This funding will ensure that comprehensive, uninterrupted support is available to survivors across the Region. This crisis line  is essential for supporting survivors of sexual assault, exploitation, and human trafficking by connecting them with local sexual assault agencies that provide free, immediate assistance through the crisis hotline. When individuals reach out via phone or chat, they are connected to trained and experienced volunteers and/or staff who offer immediate support under the guidance of a volunteer program manager. Many of these survivors come from marginalized and economically disadvantaged communities, making the crisis line a crucial, free resource available around the clock to those in need. Post-covid our calls to our crisis line have gone from 1-2 calls a day to 3-6 calls a day, sometimes simultaneously.  The Oshawa Durham Rape Crisis Centre (DRCC) provides short and long term counselling services for Gender-Based Violence (GBV), Intimate Partner Violence (IPV), human trafficking and sexual exploitation.  These areas have a profound impact in our community, employees, and in particular, our youth and marginalized communities. We directly address the pressing issue of GBV and IPV; empowering survivors to heal, regain agency, and break the cycle of violence. Through outreach and awareness efforts, we challenge harmful attitudes and promote gender equality. Our clients receive long term comprehensive support to ensure their well-being; fostering a culture of compassion and resilience.   The Crisis Line is the life line that supports Durham Residents in Oshawa, Whitby, Ajax, Pickering, Clarington, Port Perry and Uxbridge for immediate support.
