Five smiling friends pose in front of a vibrant, graffiti-covered wall adorned with colorful fish.

We're seeking donations to help us bring new Canadian play between stars and sky to the stage! This play is written by six-time award-winning playwright Mercedes Isaza Clunie, and was developed during a 16-month residency at Tarragon Theatre. First Born's mission is to bring this modern epic to independent production by February 2027. Brought to life by an electric company of Toronto artists, this story perfectly captures the nuances of mental health through a queer, immigrant lens. The play is bold, brave, funny, and cathartic -- asking desperately to be told today. PLAY SYNOPSIS: Someone is a soul splitter, responsible for leading souls through space, time, and life. After a major screwup in the eyes of the Great Council, Someone is forced to reexamine their role and responsibility as a Great Being. Meanwhile on Earth, Azul struggles with mental illness, addiction, and the collapse of her relationship with Blanca, her best friend and god given soulmate. Spanning the before, during, and after of life and death, the play interrogates what it means to be watched by the gods today, exploring love, lust, betrayal, mortality, and self loathing at the intersection of the human and the divine. A play about being witnessed, and the radical act of refusing to be alone. Content note: this production depicts suicide and explores mental illness and addiction. Support resources will be available in the lobby and in the program. About this pageThis is a crowdfunded campaign. We're building between stars and sky independently, on our own terms, because a story told in the voices of young people, queer folks, and immigrants shouldn't have to wait for a big house to grant permission. No institution is footing the bill, so every gift, at any amount, goes straight into getting this show onstage. 100% of what you give goes directly to the artists and the work onstage. None of it covers our company's operating costs. 10% of our final earned revenue from this production will be donated to CAMH. (Please note: First Born Theatre is a registered not-for-profit, not a charity, so we're unable to issue tax receipts.) We also welcome major gifts. If you're able to give at a higher level, we've built a giving ladder below with perks and impact tied to each amount. Giving ladder⭐ Star, $250+ Funds a day in the rehearsal room. Includes 2 tickets and a program credit.🌙 Moon, $500+ Funds costumes, props, and set.
