Who we are…Fur Them is an initiative to end the unethical treatment of domesticated animals and to provide a rehabilitative environment for them until they find their forever homes. Our mission…Our mission is to protect animals from cruelty through advocacy and taking action. Our goals…First, we are creating petitions for our local government in efforts to pass legislation to stop animal mills, which are large-scale breeding companies who prioritize profits over the welfare of their animals, often resulting in their animals being raised in neglectful or abusive conditions. Offspring of animal mills are often riddled with genetic disorders, impacting the longevity and quality of life for their animals. Many pet owners struggle to afford and treat these medical conditions which ultimately stem from unethical breeding practices.The breeding stock are often over-bred and do not receive proper care and enrichment they need to thrive. The lack of regulation for who these companies sell their offspring to predisposes their animals to end up in dangerous situations like neglect and abuse.The allowance of impulsive animal buying also predisposes the offspring to be at greater risk of ending up in shelters.When many shelters are at overcapacity they euthanize animals who are harder to get adopted so they can afford and make space for incoming animals.Animal mills exploit their animals and unsuspecting buyers, and abuse both animal mill stock and shelter animals alike. We also hope to spread awareness for outside organizations who are petitioning local legislative action for the betterment of animals, and to help animal rescue startups generate funding and organization support. Another issue we hope to address is the over-population of cats.Cats are an invasive species that can harm wildlife populations, like birds. Feral cats are not suited to live with humans, or can occupy shelter spaces, costing the lives of other cats.Care and euthanasia of the animals at municipal shelters costs an abundance of tax payer’s money, not to mention the lives of animals!We’d love to initiate TNR (Trap, Neuter, Return) programs, but they are tricky to responsibly run because of the impact cats have on the population of wildlife, considering that some locations struggle with wildlife conservation more than others do. Our TNR program would include likely partnering with corporations, homes, or communities that are willing to maintain a supply of food for nearby cats. This ensures that the cats are able to live their lives without posing as great of a risk on the ecosystem, because they are provided a constant food source by the community. When building TNR initiatives, it’s important to account for not only the cats, but the future of our ecosystem as well! One alternative to address the cat over-population crisis is to hire these felines as barn cats where they can hunt mice and other pests for land owners. Barn cats are beneficial for people who have rodents that eat crops or damage the property. Barn cat initiatives not only help farmers and land owners, but it also provides an alternative to euthanasia of feral cats by providing them an enriching environment. This can implemented as another responsible TNR program because the cats hunt rodents and are provided additional food by the property owner, reducing the amount of birds the cats may harm if they were released into their normal territory. Barn cat initiatives also provide cats shelter and access to additional care that the owner is willing to provide.We hope to be able to provide community and barn cat housing so others don’t need to financially compensate for these animals, but this is only possible with your help! Many animals live in neglectful conditions like living their lives on a chain. Although animal control can sometimes convince the pet owners to allow rescue for the animals, it’s not always possible. Although chaining a dog may seem like abuse and neglect, as long as a chained or outside dog is provided food, water and shade/shelter, in many places it is not legally considered as neglect. Many people are uneducated about why this is harmful for dogs, or maybe struggle to give up their dog for a better life. We hope to generate the funding to provide chain link fenced in spaces for dogs in these situations, free of charge for the owner. Space to run around, a cot, dog house, and enrichment toys can make a great difference in these dog’s lives, and the owner’s too. Hopefully we can supply these animals food and toys to assist their owners financially. This is something that requires a larger team and larger funding, so it’s something probably further down the road for us. The big dream is to start a large rescue where the animals are provided a fear-free environment. We want to make a natural living space, not your typical shelter, but an abundance of land to roam and things to do.Our vision is to have acres of land and hiking trails for not only shelter animals, but also training, daycare, boarding, grooming, and 24/7 vet care with specialized medical practitioners.Imagine, all of your most trusted pet professionals in one place.It’d be incredible if we got to a point where we can give back to ensure that adopters are given complimentary and/or discounted goods and services. We’d love to start a program where our shelter animals can engage in mutually beneficial opportunities. These may include…Reading programs where students read to shelter dogs. This is a great way to build confidence in young readers, and to socialize and provide enrichment for dogs.Another aspiration is to work with prisoners to train shelter dogs. This is something many other shelters and rescues participate in, and it’s mutually beneficial for the dog and the inmate. These programs provide a sense of purpose, fulfillment, comfort, and responsibility for the inmates, and helps the dogs get adopted easier, while also providing them daily enrichment. This is a pretty big mission, but it starts off small. It will take a lot of time and a lot of money, but most importantly, a community.
