Jujube has developed a rabbit habit. 🐇🖤 Seven months ago, Jujube was terrified of human hands.He watched every movement. He lunged, hissed, swatted and bit when he felt threatened. His whole world was built around surviving, and trusting people was nowhere on his radar.Today, he is still very much a work in progress... but he is playing, getting the zoomies, staying close instead of retreating, allowing brief touches while eating and, most recently, eating rabbit p&acirc;t&eacute; directly from his foster&rsquo;s finger right down to the skin. Then he did it again. 🥹🖤 For Jujube, that is enormous. And somehow, one of the biggest things helping him get there is his very expensive rabbit habit. For a cat who came into care with a stomach full of actual garbage, Jujube has certainly acquired some taste. 😂 His favourite food is Royal Canin Selected Protein PR rabbit p&acirc;t&eacute; &mdash; a special-order food that can only be purchased through a veterinary clinic. Because Jujube is a long-term foster, this is also an ongoing expense. But for him, the p&acirc;t&eacute; is much more than food. It has become one of the most valuable tools we have for helping him learn that human hands can actually bring good things.Jujube&rsquo;s story began in December 2025 in Stony Plain, Alberta, when a new homeowner noticed a black cat appearing on their security camera only at night. He was outside in freezing temperatures and clearly in distress, so they brought him in for a microchip scan. He wasn&rsquo;t chipped. Jujube was eventually deemed feral and &ldquo;unadoptable.&rdquo; His finder still took him home and tried to help, but quickly realized he needed someone experienced with extremely fearful, spicy cats.That is when they reached out to Hope Lives Here. Jujube came into HLH care in January 2026 and was placed with a long-term foster in February. Cats like Jujube are incredibly hard to place. They need someone who understands fear-based behavior and is willing to move completely at the cat&rsquo;s pace, for however long that takes. Most of his experiences with hands had involved trapping, restraint, a full shave, dental extractions, medications, injections and other necessary vet treatments he couldn&rsquo;t understand.So his foster stopped asking him for more than he was ready to give. For more than seven months, Jujube has been allowed to keep the safe space he chose under the bed while his foster works with him every day, slowly showing him that his environment is safe. And it is working. That is why his rabbit p&acirc;t&eacute; matters so much. It gives his foster a safe, low-pressure way to work close to him, build positive associations with hands and let Jujube choose curiosity over fear while still staying completely in control.His food may be expensive, but right now it is doing far more than filling his belly. It is helping Jujube learn that hands can be safe.
