Eligibility & Qualification
Individual Membership is open to all persons aged 18 or older residing in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, who either hail from Kerala or whose family ties go back to Kerala [III-(i)]. All applicants must agree to support, subscribe to, and promote the cultural objectives of the SMA and be bound by its Rules and Regulations [III-(i)].


Membership Rights & Exclusive Benefits
Registered members in good standing enjoy exclusive privileges within the association, including:

  • Voting Rights: One vote per registered individual member at all General Body meetings and official elections [III-(vii)].
  • No Proxy Voting: Members must cast their own votes; voting by proxy or on behalf of an absent individual is strictly prohibited [III-(iii), III-(vii)].
  • Leadership Eligibility: Eligible to nominate candidates or contest for positions on the Board of Directors or the Executive Committee [IV]. (Note: Associate members/non-Keralites are strictly barred from voting or running for office) [III-(ii)].
  • Official Communications: Direct access to the SMA Membership Register updates, official meeting notifications, and financial reports [III-(vi), IV].

Event Attendance vs. Membership Status


While non-members and the general public are welcome to attend and enjoy SMA community events and cultural celebrations, only official, registered members hold legal Membership Rights, voting powers, and governance eligibility within the association [III-(ii), III-(vii), IV].

Eligibility & Qualification


Designed for individuals above the age of 18 years [III-(i)] who hail from Kerala (or whose family ties go back to Kerala) [III-(i)] and are currently residing in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, while pursuing their studies at a recognized institution (e.g., Algoma University or Sault College). To qualify for this category, a valid student identification card or proof of enrollment must be submitted upon application or renewal. All student applicants must sign a declaration agreeing to support, subscribe to, and promote the cultural objectives of the SMA and be bound by its Rules and Regulations [III-(i)].


Membership Rights & Exclusive Benefits


Student Members hold the exact same rights as Single Individual Members. Provided they remain Members in Good Standing by paying the prescribed fee [III-(v)], they enjoy the following exclusive privileges:

  • Voting Rights: One vote per registered Student Member at all General Body meetings and official elections [III-(vii)].
  • No Proxy Voting: Student Members must cast their own votes; voting by proxy or on behalf of an absent individual is strictly prohibited [III-(iii), III-(vii)].
  • Leadership Eligibility: Eligible to nominate candidates or contest for positions on the Board of Directors or the Executive Committee [IV]. (Note: Associate members/non-Keralite international students are strictly barred from voting or running for office) [III-(ii)].
  • Official Communications: Direct access to SMA communications, meeting notifications, and organizational updates [III-(vi), IV].
Family Membership

Eligibility & Qualification


Family Membership is open to all persons of Kerala origin and their immediate families living in the same household in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario [III-(ii)]. For membership purposes, a "Family" is defined as the head of the household, his or her spouse, and dependent children [III-(i)]. Self-supporting individuals or unmarried independent children above the age of 18 living in the same household must obtain separate individual memberships [III-(ii)]. All adult family members must agree to support the cultural objectives of the SMA and be bound by its Rules and Regulations [III-(i)].


Membership Rights & Exclusive Benefits


Upon payment of the prescribed family membership fee, families enjoy full integration into the association and the following exclusive privileges:

  • Two Separate Votes: Both the primary member and their spouse are entitled to two separate, independent votes at all General Body meetings and official elections [III-(iii)].
  • No Spousal Proxy: One spouse shall not vote on behalf of an absent spouse; both must cast their votes independently, and general proxy voting is strictly prohibited [III-(iii), III-(vii)].
  • Children’s Voting Rights: Children under the age of 18 do not receive voting rights [III-(i)]. However, dependent children above the age of 18 who are registered under the family classification retain separate, independent voting rights [III-(i), III-(vii)].
  • Leadership Eligibility: Both the primary member and their spouse are eligible to nominate candidates or contest for positions on the Board of Directors or the Executive Committee [IV]. (Note: Non-Keralite family members under an Associate status are barred from voting or running for office) [III-(ii)].
