It was to coincide with the celebration of World Fringe Day (July 11) and the announcement of record-breaking festival ticket sales and revenue earned by artists. And then, on July 10, the water started gushing in. Through the roof. It poured through projection equipment and lighting fixtures, flooding the space at a very rapid rate. Our team did the best they could, but it was too much to safely contain the water.  We had ambitious plans this summer. We recently received a generous donation of over 100 theatre seats from Théâtre Aux Écuries that we were planning on installing in late July. We were looking forward to updating the tech in both the MiniMain and the MainSpace, a project we have been holding off on but now absolutely needs to be done. As of now, all programming and activities are stopped. We had to cancel performances that were scheduled for this week and the revenue loss has begun. We unfortunately don’t know when we will be able to reopen yet. We are working with the insurance companies and our landlord to resolve the situation and assess the full extent of the damage. We have extensive damage in our MiniMain Studio, the Lobby, our offices and hallway. There is damage to the ceilings and walls, furniture and fixtures, theatre and festival equipment/technology and administrative paperwork.  There is good news. The MainSpace is thankfully not damaged from what we can tell. We eagerly want to get back to business as we are in the midst of organizing an incredible 2024-25 season with the return of some of your favourite Fringe productions, a new 2-day workshop for artists and, of course, the 2025 Fringe Festival. At the Fringe-For-All, I let our community know that we needed to raise $50K to make up for losses due to lingering pandemic impacts threatening the financial sustainability of the company. I held off on officially launching the campaign until the festival was over because I didn't want to take away or distract from artist ticket sales. Now, here we are.
