Undeterred, Bryce published a report entitled “The Story of a National Crime: Being a Record of the Health Conditions of the Indians of Canada from 1904 to 1921” after his retirement in 1922. The Presbyterian Church, of which Bryce was a member, had been responsible for a number of these schools. In 1994, over 70 years after Bryce’s passing, the Presbyterian Church in Canada apologized for its role in the residential school system and is responding to calls for action and reconciliation from Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
