Nous sommes une démocratie directe et un collectif autonome de locataires déterminés à renforcer le pouvoir des locataires et à lutter pour la démarchandisation du logement et contre tout rapport fondé sur l’exploitation et la hiérarchie. Nos membres se réunissent avec leurs voisins, dans leur immeuble ou dans leur rue, pour aborder collectivement les problèmes qui se posent dans les immeubles où ils vivent grâce au pouvoir syndical des locataires. Par des méthodes d’action directe — pétitions, installation de bannières, piquets, campagnes publiques et manifestations — nous nous représentons nous-mêmes et nous remportons des victoires dans nos quartiers. Les réseaux <a>CBC News</a> et 24 h ont couvert les activités de syndicalisation que nous avons menées avec des locataires de Cogir, lesquelles ont débouché sur des négociations collectives.<a> 24h</a> a également couvert notre campagne de syndicalisation contre Mantha Investments. Le <a>Mtl Blog</a> a couvert nos activités d’organisation des locataires de Cromwell contre une rénoviction massive. Une <a href="https://montreal.citynews.ca/2023/02/27/cancellation-ville-marie-expressway-evictions/" target="_blank">campagne contre l’éviction</a> du campement de sans-abri à Ville-Marie a empêché sa destruction pendant des mois. Après l’envoi de pétitions et de courriels à Mantha Investments, les locataires ont réussi à avoir de nouveaux réservoirs d’eau chaude et un accès Internet plus fonctionnel. Une manifestation jusqu’au bureau de Cogir a permis aux locataires d’obtenir des réparations de plusieurs milliers de dollars, une indemnisation directe et des remises de loyer.   Ce fonds légal et de solidarité protégera les locataires contre les poursuites intentées par les propriétaires pour empêcher l’action collective des locataires. En 2023-2024, nos frais juridiques associés à un seul propriétaire se sont élevés à plus de 20 000 dollars. L’argent recueilli servira surtout à la défense des locataires qui s’organisent pour obtenir des réductions de loyer et contre la crise du logement, mais également à couvrir des dépenses telles que le matériel nécessaire à la fabrication de bannières, l’impression, la location d’autobus (pour le transport des locataires jusqu’aux bureaux des propriétaires), l’aide d’urgence et les activités collectives de jardinage. Pour combattre les évictions, les hausses de loyer, la gentrification, et le harcèlement, nous, locataires, devons financer et protéger nos organisations syndicales en lutte dans nos immeubles et dans nos rues. **************************************************************************** In the face of Montreal's accelerating housing crisis, the "Syndicat des locataires autonomes de Montreal," or Montreal Autonomous Tenants' Union (SLAM-MATU) has been a union for tenants fighting back against evictions, exorbitant rent increases, harassment, and maintenance neglect on the part of their landlords. We are a direct democracy and autonomous collective of tenants who are dedicated to building tenant power and struggling toward the decommodification of housing, and combatting all relationships built on exploitation and hierarchy. We believe in solidarity, community organizing, and direct action. Our members get together with neighbours in their building or on their street to address issues in their building collectively through the power of tenant unions.  Through direct action, such as petitions, banner drops, pickets, public campaigns, and marches, we advocate for ourselves and win victories for our communities. <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/montreal-tenant-union-1.6533862" target="_blank">CBC News</a> and 24h have covered our unionization efforts with tenants of Cogir which led to collective negotiations. <a href="http://www.24heures.ca/2022/09/17/des-locataires-a-montreal-se-syndiquent-pour-se-faire-entendre" target="_blank">24h</a> has also covered our unionization campaign against Mantha investments. <a href="http://www.24heures.ca/2022/09/17/des-locataires-a-montreal-se-syndiquent-pour-se-faire-entendre" target="_blank">Mtl Blog</a> has covered our organizing with tenants of Cromwell against a mass renoviction. A <a href="http://montreal.citynews.ca/2023/02/27/cancellation-ville-marie-expressway-evictions/" target="_blank">campaign against the eviction</a> of the Ville-Marie homeless encampment led to months of its protection from destruction. After emails and petitions to Mantha Investments, tenants had new hot water tanks and a more functional Internet installed. A march on the offices of Cogir brought about thousands of dollars in repairs, direct compensation, and forgiven rent.  This legal-solidarity fund will protect tenants from landlord lawsuits that try to stop collective tenant action. In 2023-2024, our legal costs associated with one landlord were over $20,000. Money raised will primarily go to to defending tenants who are organizing for lower rent and against the housing crisis but will also go to smaller purchases such as banner material, printing, renting busses (when tenants need a ride to their landlord's offices), emergency aid, and collective gardening material. In the struggle against evictions, rent increases, gentrification, and harassment, we tenants need to fund and protect our own combative unions in our buildings and on our streets!
