Fonds de défense juridique trans

As part of our efforts to counter rampant anti-trans discrimination, in the light of the '1 Million March', we are launching the Trans Legal Defense Fund — a first in Canada. Funds raised will become part of a broader project to counter anti-trans hate across Turtle Island / Canada, by notably:<ul><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Funding constitutional cases, suing governments if they fail to respect trans people's fundamental, Charter-protected rights;</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Supporting individual plaintiffs in suing anti-trans actors in courts of law;</li><li style="box-sizing:inherit">Providing direct support to trans people, in the form of grants, to help pay for their name changes, as well as other court fees (e.g. filing fees).</li></ul>Funds are going to be managed by the Trans Legal Collective, a brand-new not-for-profit organization based out of Tio'tiá:ke / Montréal. Depending on the total amount received, we're going to either use all funds for the above purposes, or create a permanent endowment fund that'll enable us to further, in the long run, our mission to defend the community. We acknowledge that this is not a golden bullet that will resolve discrimination in one step, but will nonetheless continue fighting to ensure trans people obtain justice in the face of oppression. Queer and trans youth, adults, and elders deserve safety and dignity, and we'll do everything we can to further this mission.
