Steps to RememberOn April 14, 2016, British Columbia became the first province in Canada to declare a public health emergency in response to the opioid crisis. Since then, tens of thousands of lives have been lost across the country.That same year, a national system began tracking opioid-related deaths. In less than a decade, more than 55,000 people have died.But these are not just numbers. Each statistic represents a person... someone who was loved, who had hopes, struggles, and a story. Behind every loss is a family living with grief that doesn’t end. The numbers don’t capture the full weight of that loss, or the impact on the people left behind.Steps to Remember is about changing that.Our Mission for 2026To mark 10 years since the opioid crisis was first declared a public health emergency, On the Road 4 Mental Health will complete 10 walks across Ontario in 2026.In each walk, we will take one step for every life lost in those first 10 years.That’s over 55,000 steps (approximately 42–44 kilometres per walk).Each step is an act of remembrance.
