Scene Work and Character Creation for the Actor With guest teaching artist: Vanessa PorteousPine Tree Players, CanmoreTheatre Alberta Workshop on DemandSunday March 1, 202610:30 &ndash; 6:30. (Lunch 1:30 &ndash; 2:30)Location Miner&#39;s Union Hall (738 7th Street, Canmore) Come learn valuable tools to prepare to act in a production, whether you&rsquo;re a beginner or you&rsquo;ve trod the boards many times before! This workshop is for actors at any level of experience. We&rsquo;ll spend the day exploring the fundamentals of scene work and character development for an actor. We&rsquo;ll look at:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">complicity (listening and responding to our scene partners),</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">endowment and personalization (using our imagination to connect to the role),</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">physicalization (engaging our bodies), and</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">tablework basics (how to find and use the clues in the text).</li></ul>Participants will work in pairs or trios on a short, assigned scene from either Anne of Green Gables, adapted by Ashley Griffin; Little Women, adapted by Marian de Forest; or other (to be confirmed). Guest teaching artist Vanessa Porteous will assign the roles and scenes on the day of the workshop itself. We will work &lsquo;on book&rsquo;, with the text in hand. We&rsquo;ll share our work with each other, during the day.&nbsp; There is no public presentation. Note: you may be cast in a scene where you play a character who is a different age or gender than the one you normally present to the world. Please read both scripts in advance of the workshop, so you are familiar with the story and characters. Links to the plays will be sent to all participants by Pine Tree Players. Please note this workshop is for ages 13+.

Prepare for the Canmore Summer Theatre Festival (CSTF) auditions through guided script work, personalized feedback, and repeat readings&mdash;while connecting with fellow performers and directors Shelby Pfeiffer Reinitz and Chelsea Howell-Fellows. This workshop is designed to help performers feel confident and prepared for auditions for the Canmore Summer Theatre Festival (CSTF). Participants will be given script pages and tips to prepare in advance and will work with a partner to read, receive feedback, and refine their piece. After incorporating notes, participants will have the opportunity to present a second reading, strengthening their skills and confidence. This workshop offers valuable practice ahead of CSTF auditions at the end of February and a chance to get to know the CSTF directors Shelby Pfeiffer Reinitz and Chelsea Howell-Fellows in a supportive, low-pressure setting.

Learn foundations for one of the most important roles in a theatre production: Stage Management!In this workshop, local Stage Manager Caaryn Sadoway will introduce you to the role of a Stage Manager from the beginning to end of a production. This full-day workshop will set you up to be an excellent Stage Manager with tools and tips from an industry player. We look forward to seeing you there!

Join Pine Tree Players for a one-night-only &ldquo;Play in a Day&rdquo; performance in support of the Canmore Summer Theatre Festival (CSTF) mentorship program!&nbsp; In the spirit of Shakespearean rehearsal traditions, CSTF alumni and friends will come together on the morning of December 22 to stage an entire 90-minute show&mdash;The Blue Eyed Hag by Jim Lair Beard&mdash;with just a single day to pull it all together. A prequel to&nbsp;The Tempest, The Blue Eyed Hag explores the untold story of Sycorax: the powerful witch from Algiers, mother of Caliban, and imprisoner of Ariel. Though she never appears onstage in Shakespeare&rsquo;s work, her shadow looms large&mdash;and this play brings her story to life. Part challenge, part chaos, and 100% fun, this whirlwind production celebrates creativity, community, and the unpredictable magic of live theatre. Join us for a spirited, joyfully imperfect performance that can only happen once!

Play in a Day: A fundraiser for the Canmore Summer Theatre Festival

Pine Tree Players Membership 2025

Join us for a community square dance, with caller Leslie Gotfrit and live music by The Hip to be Square Collective. There will be live music between sets featuring Canmore musicians, as well as a bar. All proceeds from this dance will benefit Pine Tree Players. Tickets are $25, doors open at 7:00 and the dancing starts at 7:30pm. No experience required! All are welcome to join us at the Miners&rsquo; Hall on Friday March 20, 2026.

Community Square Dance

Martin Finnerty, who has served as Pine Tree Players&rsquo; lighting and sound designer for several decades, will be offering a hands‑on workshop for those interested in stage lighting. The session will explore the evolution of theatrical lighting &ldquo;from then to tomorrow,&rdquo; introduce core principles of lighting design, and cover how to read and draw lighting plots. Participants will learn about different types of lighting instruments and their specific purposes. There will be opportunities for practical, on‑the‑ground experience, including:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;" type="disc"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Hanging and focusing lights (no ladder work required &mdash; pipes will be set up at ground level)</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Safe working practices</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Connecting power and data cabling</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Basic DMX programming</li></ul>We will be using Pine Tree Players&rsquo; Cognito 2 lighting console to patch fixtures, design a simple plot, create cues, and explore the board&rsquo;s many functions. If time permits, the workshop will conclude with a brief demonstration of video mapping using the QLab show control system.
