He has composed, arranged, and directed performances for Toronto production companies including Jumblies Theatre, Theatre Columbus, Queen of Pudding Theatre, and the Ashkenaz Foundation.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Over the past decade, he has written a number of choral works in collaboration with Jumblies Theatre director Ruth Howard. He has also collaborated as composer and arranger with Beth Anne Cole on her recent album, Perhaps the Gods of Love. Martin recently retired from his work as a music teacher with the Toronto District School Board and is now an active freelance musician. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;freygl gertsovski פֿרעיגל גערצאָװסקי (fae/faer/faers | פֿײ/פֿער/פֿײער) is the founder and director of Rad Yiddish. As a cultural organizer and multi-disciplinary writer, fae focuses on heritage reclamation and cultural production at the intersections of queerness, disability, post-Soviet identity, and Yiddishkayt. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;freygl has been participating in Yiddish dance at Yiddish programs and cultural festivals since 2018 and lay-leads Yiddish dancing for faer community. fae is passionate about fostering opportunities for cultural belonging and participation through accessible and inclusive events including Yiddish dancing for all abilities and ages. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Cassie Norton (she/her) is a musician with Marching Disoder and an organizer of the weekly Balfolk jam and dance.

Emphasis will be placed on playing in a way that supports and responds to dancers&#39; tempo for an enjoyable experience. Workshop participants will have the opportunity to take a Yiddish dance workshop 2 weeks later (with the option to play the tunes learned in this workshop live for the dancers, or learn the Yiddish dances to which you previously learned the tunes!) This workshop is geared towards musicians who know how to play their instrument (intermediate+), but all levels are welcome to join! No previous klezmer experience necessary. WORKSHOP LEADER BIO Jonathan Cannon is a violinist versed in a wide range of traditional music styles including Jewish, Romanian, Celtic, and American fiddling. He has been performing regularly as a klezmer musician for 20 years, sometimes as a member of award-winning Boston klezmer band Ezekiel&rsquo;s Wheels. He is also in demand as a contra dance musician, both on fiddle and on guitar accompaniment, and has played for nearly 200 contra dances. He has taught violin students across a wide range of ages and levels, both in private lessons and in workshops at camps, festivals, and schools. Rad Yiddish&nbsp;and UJPO&nbsp;present Reclaiming Myths &amp; Magic: Storytelling &amp; Performance Workshop with community-arts facilitator&nbsp;Ruth Howard&nbsp; 📅Saturday, November 15🕑2:00-5:00PM&nbsp;(Doors at 1:30PM)📍Jumblies Theatre - 132 Fort York Blvd In this workshop we&#39;ll explore ways to create collective stories combining different artistic forms (words, imagery, object play/puppetry, gesture, sound, staging).&nbsp; Themes will revolve around tales of Jewish witches, protective powers and magical gifts hidden and unharnessed - myths of survival and resistance reframed, reclaimed, and reinvented.&nbsp; A series of rapid, accessible creative exercises will lead to a final short performance&nbsp;for the day, leaving participants with a repertoire of approaches and materials to bring into subsequent story-making and arts projects.&nbsp; No experience necessary. Suitable for creative people of all abilities, ages, and backgrounds. Please note: children under 13 must participate in the workshop with an adult. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided. ACCESSIBILITY This workshop takes place in two Jumblies Theatre spaces 1. The Ground Floor and 2. The Upstairs Studio&nbsp; 1. The Ground Floor offers step-free access throughout. The main entrance has a push-button power assisted door. There is a small angled lip of less than 1-inch at the doorway. There is a single-stall, all-gender washroom. The washroom has grab bars behind and adjacent to the toilet, a wheelchair-accessible sink, and sufficient space for wheelchair users. WORKSHOP LEADER BIOS&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;A mainstay of the Canadian klezmer scene, Martin van de Ven (he/him) performs with Canada&rsquo;s hottest klezmer band, Beyond the Pale. A unique stylist, he brings fire, elegance, and humour to his performances with the award-winning group. He has composed, arranged, and directed performances for Toronto production companies including Jumblies Theatre, Theatre Columbus, Queen of Pudding Theatre, and the Ashkenaz Foundation.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Over the past decade, he has written a number of choral works in collaboration with Jumblies Theatre director Ruth Howard. He has also collaborated as composer and arranger with Beth Anne Cole on her recent album, Perhaps the Gods of Love. Martin recently retired from his work as a music teacher with the Toronto District School Board and is now an active freelance musician. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Emily Glass (she/her) is a professional language teacher and community dancer who grew up near Vancouver. Since falling in love with Yiddish at her first beginner class at the University of Ottawa in 2015, she has been active in the Yiddish cultural world, participating in the Steiner Summer Program at the Yiddish Book Centre, KlezKanada, Yiddish Summer Paris, and Yiddish New York. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;In 2024, Emily took a break from teaching high school to do a masters in Yiddish Studies at the University of Toronto. During her graduate studies, and under the mentorship of KlezKanada&#39;s Avia Moore, she researched how Ashkenazi ways of being have been expressed in dance cultures. Subsequently, she has led Yiddish dance workshops and events in Toronto and Vancouver. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Cassie Norton (she/her) is a musician with Marching Disorder and an organizer of the weekly Balfolk jam and dance.
