Adapted from the award-winning journalism of the Climate Disaster Project, an international newsroom at the University of Victoria, this documentary theatre production pulls from hundreds of testimonies of people across Canada who have lived through climate change together. Climate disaster is not far away, not happening to someone else. It is here now, happening to us. Eyes of the Beast shows how we still have each other during those disasters, creating community amidst catastrophe. Every performance is followed by a facilitated talkback, giving audiences a chance to reflect on the stories they’ve heard and share their own experiences of climate disaster. A Vancouver Island political leader will also be present to listen to the performance, as well as the audience, and reflect on how we can help communities impacted by those disasters. Created by: Sebastien Archibald, Gavan Cheema, and Kelsey Kanatan Wavey ⭐ Awards & Recognition ⭐ 2026 — PACT Green Award (Winner) Recognizing Eyes of the Beast for outstanding leadership and impact in climate-conscious theatre. 2025 — Anthem Awards (Silver) Honoured for work that inspires social change and public engagement. 2025 — Canadian Association of Journalists Awards (Silver, Environmental and Climate Change) Eyes of the Beast: Climate Disaster Survivor Stories became the first play ever recognized for reporting excellence at the Canadian Association of Journalists Awards. The documentary play shares the experiences of British Columbians who lived through the extreme fires, heat, and flooding of 2021.
