We are coming together to support and uplift our friend while they navigate the colonial legal system. H&Iacute;SW̱ḴE so much for your support! Artist statement:Salish Wo(ollie) DogThis piece was a part of a group exhibition called Trip Deck at the Aunty Collective. Each artist was invited to paint three skateboards. I chose to put all my love and attention into one deck as my time was limited with learning my ancestral language in a full-time program called W̱&cedil;SENĆOŦEN IST. I wanted to honour our Salish Woolly Dogs and plant medicines in this piece. The land, sea, and sky are all represented in this design to signify that every bit of our existence is intimately connected; the moon, stars, rain, ocean, plants, and animals. The balanced composition reiterates the balance of all these aspects of life. The Woolly Dogs are relaxed and surrounded by saltwater and trailing blackberries. This is a testament to how much we love(d) our dogs; we surround them with good medicines and made sure they were happy. We are saltwater people, as half our territory is water and so much of our life is sustained from the ocean. The trailing blackberries protect us and provide pollinators with beautiful star-like flowers for forage, and gift us with tiny, sweet berries for the animals and the people. The moon in the centre honours our connection to the sky. We as W̱S&Aacute;NEĆ people operate under a 13 moon calendar. This way of life helps guide us through each season with intentionality and harmony with the land. I&#39;m incredibly grateful to help my friend navigate these difficult times by contributing my artwork.
