Sir Andrew MacPhail Foundation

The Sir Andrew MacPhail Foundation preserves and promotes the cultural heritage of Prince Edward Island through community events, educational programs, and the restoration of the historic MacPhail Homestead, fostering appreciation for local history and traditions.

How Islanders have historically cared for people with mental health issues has evolved considerably over the past century and a half. Today, Islanders can access a comprehensive spectrum of mental health services that include &mdash; but also go far beyond &mdash; the asylum/mental hospital. &nbsp;This history of mental health&nbsp;care will highlight information on Andrew Macphail&rsquo;s father who was a supervisor at the PEI Hospital for the Insane.

There has never been an individual who has had such a profound effect on PEI. Rev. MacDonald travelled across the province preaching. &nbsp;His preaching was so powerful and passionate that people were &quot;awakened&quot;. The people in the Orwell&nbsp;area were central to his ministry. He is buried in the Orwell Head cemetery.

2026 marks the tenth anniversary of right to die legislation in Canada, a decade that has been fraught with legal challenges to expand the requirement that patients wanting MAID should be actively dying to include those with irremediable mental illnesses and dementia. Have we gone too far? Are the &ldquo;vulnerable&rdquo; at risk? &nbsp;Is all suffering equal, or does only physical suffering count? The author of the bestseller, A Good Death: How to Make the Most of Our Final Choices, Sandra will decode the legal and political challenges faced by ordinary patients, including Sue Rodriguez, Jean Truchon, and Claire&nbsp;Brosseau, all of whom sacrificed privacy to challenge laws they believed were unjust.

Heather will provide background on the settling of Uigg in 1829 with a focus on Rev. Sam, her great-great grandfather. &nbsp;Rev. Sam was known as a strict Baptist&nbsp;minister; his descendants have deep ties to the area.

Art can be a powerful tool in conveying a message, reaching people emotionally as well as intellectually. The message of climate change is no different, and Islanders are reacting as never before by doing what they do best: making climate change art. This talk describes how local artists &ndash; visual artists and photographers, writers and poets, musicians and performing artists and filmmakers &ndash; are working through traditional means such as art shows and concerts, books and films, but also with local NGOs and policymakers and Island&nbsp;youth, to convey powerful messages.

Gary has had close to a 50-year career in journalism on the Island, with over 20 of those years serving as Managing editor of The Guardian. During that time, he witnessed many of the province&rsquo;s major news stories and events, and interesting&nbsp;personalities.

Montgomery enthusiasts are invited to enjoy afternoon tea every Thursday (overflow on Fridays) from 2 – 3.30 p.m. For $35 guests will not only enjoy tea or coffee with scrumptious eats and treats, they will be given a short presentation on Lucy Maud’s encounters with Sir Andrew himself.

Between 1893 and 1930, about 190 children were sent to PEI by the Middlemore Children&#39;s Emigration Home as British Home Children and placed as servants and labourers on farms and in homes across the Island. The average age was 10, and two-thirds of the children were boys. &nbsp;Sara Underwood will share some of their stories.

Brian Corbett, &nbsp;great, great nephew of Sir Andrew Macphail, set himself as a retirement project to research his family history. He talks with Sandra Martin, another Macphail descendant, about the fascinating details he has uncovered about Janetta Macphail, Sir Andrew&rsquo;s younger sister. Aunt Nettie, as she was called in the family, was a distinguished teacher and the first woman to graduate from Prince Of Wales College in Charlottetown.

Sir Andrew Macphail spent his summers on PEI, but in the &ldquo;cold months&rdquo; he lived mostly in Montreal where he was an active member of the Pen and Pencil Club, a bilingual and often boozy discussion group of writers and painters including Stephen Leacock and PEI&rsquo;s own Robert Harris. &nbsp;

Island Folk Singer-Songwriter Shane Pendergast presents a selection of his sea-related Island folk songs, with a discussion of the history behind the compositions. He will also touch on some of the Island's early "songmakers" and how their work was preserved. Shane Pendergast has folk music in his blood. Hailing from a long lineage of storytellers and musicians in Prince Edward Island, he is keeping the Maritime folk tradition alive with his honest and insightful compositions. From the small halls of PEI to acclaimed folk festivals across the world, Shane has cemented himself as one of Atlantic Canada’s finest folk troubadours. His 2021 album ‘Second Wind” won Contemporary Roots Album of the Year at the Music PEI Awards, and his live album “The House Before the Bridge” was nominated for Roots/Traditional Album of the Year at the 2023 ECMA Awards.

September 1 Lunch & Lecture - Shane Pendergast - Sculpted by the Sea: Telling Island Stories Through Song

For almost the entire 19th century, the MacDonald family of Panmure Island and Georgetown played a central role in the economic, social, and political life of Kings County. Beginning with its audacious patriarch, Andrew Macdonald of Arisaig, Scotland, the family's fortunes rose and fell in its pursuit of land, wealth, and status in the New World where they became landowners, shipbuilders, fishing entrepreneurs, and merchants. Politically, the family dynasty included a Father of Confederation, two lieutenant-governors, a senator, a long- time Member of Parliament, two provincial cabinet ministers, and one of the longest tenured members in the history of the provincial legislature. To follow their fortunes, then, is to trace the history of Prince Edward Island.

A presentation with a brief introduction about the Selkirk Settlers and then, primarily using court and probate records a sharing of stories about some of the early Selkirk settlers that are not commonly known.

Illustrated with photographs and lively stories, Faye will end the talk with readings from her novel, The Lighthouse Keepers, which is set at the St. Peters Lighthouse and the Point Prim&nbsp;Lighthouse.
