ACCT Public Appointments Workshop
Canadian institutions need your leadership!Public agencies, boards, commissions, and crown corporations help guide decisions about health, housing, transit, education, and more. They’re meant to include people who reflect their communities—not just career insiders. Across Canada, these bodies recruit community members and seek diverse representation.Join ACCT Foundation's Public Appointments Workshop, preparing Asian Canadians to seek out and pursue civic leadership opportunities in public entities and civil society! Who this is forThis workshop is for Asian Canadians, 18+, anywhere in Canada who are ready to take on civic leadership roles. Perhaps:You’ve never heard the term “public appointment” before. You’re already leading—through work, volunteering, advocacy, caregiving, student life, cultural or community organizing—and want a bigger platform. This opportunity is open to public‑minded individuals and/or experts in their fields who want to contribute to more inclusive institutions. Why this matters for Asian Canadian communitiesAsian Canadians are underrepresented in public entities such as agencies, boards, commissions, crown corporations, and civil society leadership roles. Many are well‑positioned and ready to serve, bringing needed diversity of experiences, perspectives, and leadership to enhance decision‑making.Public appointments are one concrete way to ensure that Asian Canadian perspectives are part of the rooms where policies, programs, and priorities are shaped. What you’ll get out of itThis workshop is designed to build confidence, language, and practical tools for Asian Canadians to lead in civic spaces and public life—focused specifically on public appointments. You will:Learn about public agencies, boards, commissions, and crown corporations (the “ABCs” of civic leadership)Hear firsthand experiences from government representatives, civic leaders, and current public appointeesExplore board governance basics: board structures, roles, and how to participate effectively on boards and committeesReflect on your identity, lived experience, and leadership as assets for public rolesLeave ready to seek out civic leadership opportunities and with a simple plan to pursue an appointmentCost and accessibility: $15018-30 years old?
