In every instance, we will be happy to send you a charitable receipt for Canadian income tax purposes. We are also asking you to consider a generous contribution to G78 to help us organize ongoing dialogue and advocacy for progressive Canadian engagement in world affairs. The foundation of the Group is the generosity of its members and donors. We are not funded by the government, allowing us to preserve our independence. So, the financial support we receive from individuals is critically important to both our survival and independence. With many changes in the landscape in recent years, our costs have risen considerably and our income has been challenged, particularly during the Covid period –– and we must appeal to our supporters to help us keep up. Our e-events are easily accessible and they are free. Yet it takes financial resources to mount the webinars and conferences, to follow up with advocacy to policymakers, and to inject important ideas and perspectives into public discourse. Current international issues present a compelling backdrop to our work: • The war in Ukraine is escalating, with the NATO powers and Russia inching closer to hostilities. The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists has warned that we are in a time of unprecedented danger: their Doomsday Clock now stands at 90 seconds to midnight, the closest it has ever been to global catastrophe• According to the 2022 World Inequality Report, the richest 10 percent now own 76 percent of the world’s wealth and claim 52 percent of the world’s income while the poorest 50 percent own only 2 percent of the world’s wealth and claim 8.5 percent of the world’s income. Contemporary global inequalities today are as high as they were at the peak of Western imperialism in the early 20 century• A new U.N. report affirms that measures to limit global warming to less than 1.5 degrees Celsius, the goal set by the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement, are important, but not sufficient to arrest a calamitous climate trajectory in the coming decades. The Group of 78 strives to deepen understanding of these global threats and seeks opportunities to advocate for change—in the policies and actions of governments, businesses, and civil society. For example: • We worked to widen the perspective on “the Ukraine-Russia war”, looking to understand more fully the events that led to it and what might be done to stop it.• We drew attention to the ignored challenge of adaptation to climate change when the government and most other organizations were focusing exclusively on mitigation. We were among the first to advocate for support toward “loss and damage” for climate-vulnerable countries• We continue to draw government and public attention to other important issues, including:• how Big Oil thwarts the regulatory process and our climate targets;• viewing Canada’s trade policy through a gender lens;• the prospects for democracy in Latin America; and• agricultural innovation and global food security Our policy conference this year is entitled How Can We Prevent and Stop Violence? Effective Actions to Curtail Conflict. Stay tuned for more information as details of the program are released. Your continuing as a member is a valuable contribution to helping G78 pursue this work. A generous donation in addition will be an expression of solidarity with our efforts to build a more peaceful, equitable, and sustainable world. Both are eligible for a charitable receipt. We are most grateful for whatever you can do. If you have any questions about G78 or its programming or ideas and suggestions for our work, we would also be happy to hear from you. Please send me a message at [email protected] or call me at 613-234-9177. Thank you in advance for your consideration. Sincerely, Roy Culpeper, Chair, Group of 78
