Haunted Halls 2026Presented in Partnership with Science North. This October, The Thunder Bay Museum’s galleries awaken after dark—and some objects were never meant to be disturbed. Step inside the Museum for a new immersive haunted experience filled with unsettling characters, eerie environments, theatrical effects and frightening surprises. Follow the trail through transformed galleries and shadowy passageways as the guide takes you through the Museum’s most dangerous objects, which come terrifyingly to life. Will you make it through before the curse claims you? The Plan for Your TerrorEach tour is a guide-led walking experience lasting approximately 45 minutes, with guests travelling through the Museum in groups of up to ten. This year, guests will enter at the rear of the building, where staff will check tickets and organize groups. The haunted route will wind through the Museum before concluding in the gift shop at the front of the building. Before You EnterThis is an intense haunted attraction designed to frighten. The experience may include darkness, sudden loud noises, theatrical haze, flashing or rapidly changing lights, frightening imagery, confined-feeling spaces and close encounters with costumed performers. Guests who are pregnant or who have heart conditions, respiratory conditions, epilepsy, sensory sensitivities, mobility concerns or other conditions that could be affected by these elements should consider whether participation is appropriate. Please contact halloween@thunderbaymuseum.com in advance if you would like to discuss accessibility or possible accommodations. Age RecommendationHaunted Halls is recommended for guests aged 13 and older. The experience includes jump scares, darkness, loud sounds, frightening imagery, descriptions of crime and murder, and mature themes.Guests under 16 must be accompanied throughout the experience by a parent or guardian. Parents and guardians are responsible for deciding whether the attraction is appropriate for the younger guests in their group. Arrival and Event EntrancePlease arrive at least 10 minutes before your selected departure time. Check-in is at the marked Haunted Halls entrance at the rear of the Thunder Bay Museum, 425 Donald Street East—not the Museum’s regular front entrance. Follow the Haunted Halls signs from the parking area. Guests may be required to wait outdoors until their group is admitted, so please dress for the weather. The experience concludes in the gift shop at the front of the Museum. Guests parked at the rear of the building will need to make a short outdoor trip around the building after exiting. Accessibility and AccommodationsThe Thunder Bay Museum is committed to making Haunted Halls accessible wherever reasonably possible. This is a 45-minute guided experience through darkened galleries and theatrical environments that may include haze, loud or sudden sounds, flashing or rapidly changing lights, frightening imagery and confined-feeling spaces. Because the event entrance and route differ from regular Museum access, guests who require step-free entry, use a mobility aid, attend with a support person or service animal, or would benefit from additional sensory or accessibility information are encouraged to contact us as early as possible. We will discuss available accommodations and help make appropriate arrival arrangements. For accessibility questions or accommodation requests, please contact halloween@thunderbaymuseum.com. Join the Thunder Bay Museum for the October presentation of our 2026–2027 Free Public Lecture series as we welcome Julie Cosgrove and Betty Carpick for an exploration of "A Record of Time: Chronicling McVicar Creek Through Art" 💻 Joining Us Online?CLICK HERE TO JOIN THE ZOOM WEBINARWebinar ID: 875 9800 8184 Description:Centring around McVicar Creek’s wild, hybrid, and built spaces, artists Julie Cosgrove and Betty Carpick spent two years rambling and making handmade art materials to capture time, data, and a land-based artwork. Their 2026 installation at the CoLab Gallery replicated the creek’s flow while playing with scale, fluidity, transparencies and layers, surface materials, mark-making elements, and the elusiveness of naturally coloured inks made from materials they gathered from the urban waterway. Presenter Bio:Julie Cosgrove is a Francophone visual artist working predominantly in painting. She's exhibited internationally and nationally and is the recipient of numerous awards. Her experiences as a canoe and kayak guide in the James Bay watershed are a central influence. Julie’s affinity with the subtle shifts in travelling with the land are integrated into exploring abstraction and weaving ideas of landscape, mapping, and navigation. Her large-scale compositions consider place and space through composition, colour, line, layering and depth. As an artist, collaborator, educator, juror, and board member, she’s contributed to many arts organizations. Betty Carpick grew up in far northern Manitoba. The interdisciplinary and intergenerational ways that she makes art and offers stewardship are shaped by her Cree and Eastern European upbringing. Her family’s lived experience with the permanent devastation of the Churchill River watershed amplifies how she uses art to hold conversations. As a land-based artist, educator, activist, and community-arts practitioner, much of her work looks at social, cultural, and environmental issues by creating art that exists in the space between process and performance as well as the missing portions between the real and the imagined. Follow the collection as it flourished under Garton’s curatorship, reaching far beyond the region through international exchange while drawing other important botanical collections into its care, and continuing to evolve under the stewards who followed him. Still growing through those who explore and document the region today, the Herbarium remains both an archive of the landscapes that came before us and a botanical history still being written, one specimen at a time. Presenter Bio:Myles Cummins is the Associate Botanist at Lakehead University’s Claude E.Garton Herbarium, where he has worked with the collection since 2019. He spends his days preserving plants and piecing together the stories held within their carefully labelled sheets, using the collection to support research, teaching, and a wider appreciation of northwestern Ontario’s botanical heritage. He holds an MSc in Forestry and is currently a PhD candidate at Lakehead University, where he is investigating how northern carnivorous plant lineages capture, digest, and benefit from their prey. Most recently, he helped research and develop Out of Place: The Strange Plants of LakeSuperior’s North Shore, drawing upon the Herbarium’s collections to share some of theregion’s lesser-known botanical stories. Together, we will travel through time and explore the various water level changes within the Lake Superior basin and the many cultures and people that have called this place home for millennia. Using material belongings and landscape as evidence, we will go through thousands of years of cultural change occurring at the Lakehead as evidenced by various archaeological sites from across the city. We start with the Cummins National Historic site, dating to at least 9,000 years ago, we step back to a time when dominant glaciers are receding, and the landscape looks much different than it does today. Using LiDAR elevation modelling of the city we showcase the various changes to this area and the cultural changes that occurred through time. This talk will provide insight into the deep history of our city, and the feats of ingenuity and perseverance by the Indigenous citizens who have shaped this place we now know as Thunder Bay. About the Free Public Lecture SeriesThe Thunder Bay Museum’s Free Public Lecture series explores a wide range of topics connected to the history, people, communities, environment, and culture of Thunder Bay and Northwestern Ontario. Free Public Lecture - Kelsey Pennanen – Local Archaeology Work

Every hero needs an origin story. Every hero also needs a worthy rival. On this PA day, campers become comic creators, dreaming up their own superhero and arch-nemesis, then building the gear to match. By the end of the day, they'll have a mask, a gauntlet, and a pair of hand-painted sidekicks, a villain to fight and be ready to star in their own comic adventure. What campers will do:

Explore the museum. Free Public Lecture - Todd Miller – From Voyageurs to Viking: A Brief Look at Transportation on the Great Lakes

Calling all junior paleontologists! No school today means it's the perfect day to dig into the world of dinosaurs. On this PA day, campers will uncover how fossils form, explore what scientists learn from bones and imprints, and create their very own prehistoric collection. They'll leave with salt dough fossils, a 3D dino skeleton, and a dino mask or arm puppet to bring their favourite creature to life. What campers will do:

Explore the museum. Campers start with a gallery visit, hunting for clues about ancient life and learning how paleontologists study the past.

Enjoy a dinosaur presentation. Our program staff introduce the dinosaurs that once roamed the Earth, how we know what we know about them, and what fossils can tell us.

Touch real fossils. Campers get a hands-on look at fossils up close, feeling the textures, shapes, and details left behind millions of years ago.

Make salt dough fossils. Campers press shells, leaves, and other objects into salt dough to create their own fossil imprints, then take them home to keep.

Build a 3D Q-tip dino skeleton. No school today? Let's make some noise! On this PA day, campers will explore the sounds, rhythms, and instruments that bring music to life. They'll build their own instruments, sing and play along in karaoke games, and hunt through the museum for musical clues. PA Day at the Museum - Musical Maestros

Three, two, one... blast off! No school today means it's the perfect day to explore the universe. On this PA day, campers will travel through space, creating their own aliens, launching a rocket, and creating 2d & 3D galaxies from far, far away. They'll search the museum for out-of-this-world artifacts and head home with a collection of cosmic creations. What campers will do:

Sculpt clay aliens. Campers invent a new alien species, shaping their creature from clay and giving it a name, a home planet, and a special power.

Build a rocket that launches. Campers design and decorate their own rocket, then test it out in a launch the whole group can cheer on.

Paint a pastel galaxy. Using soft, dreamy colours, campers create a swirling galaxy artwork to hang at home.

Create a 3D galaxy. Campers go beyond the page, building a layered, three-dimensional galaxy that seems to float in space.

Go on a scavenger hunt. Teams explore the museum searching for crashed alien space ships and help save the aliens!

What your child will take away

A clay alien of their own invention

A rocket they designed, decorated, and launched

A pastel galaxy and a 3D galaxy to display at home

A closer look at space, imagination, and creative problem-solving

A day of creativity, exploration, and new friends

Good to know

All materials are provided, and no experience is needed.

Clay and paint activities can get messy, so please send your child in clothes that can handle it.

Please pack a nut-free lunch and a water bottle.

Space is limited to 12 campers.

Reach for the stars.
