Transition Kamloops

Transition Kamloops empowers the community to foster environmental, social, and economic sustainability through grassroots initiatives, hands-on events, and advocacy, creating a resilient future together.

Our third Nature-Friendly Yards gathering is planned as a conversational tour of a local garden. Participants will explore a backyard with native plants beneath mature ponderosa pines and discuss the homeowner&#39;s journey of establishing the garden, including challenges such as the mountain pine beetle. The tour will also look ahead to plans for transforming the sunny front yard into a landscape that better complements the native backyard. The discussion will include how plant selection can mimic the surrounding landscape, and participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and identify native plants. We also hope to provide copies of a locally produced <a fr-original-style="" href="https://mgabc.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/01/TSMG-Native-Plants-pamphlet-PRINT.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Gardening with Native Plants pamphlet</a> for participants. As with our previous gatherings, we welcome both experienced and new gardeners. By sharing ideas, experiences, and lessons learned, we hope to foster peer mentoring while creating green corridors throughout our neighbourhoods. Nature-Friendly Yards Event #3 -- Plant Selection

Nature-Friendly Yards #2: How Healthy Is Your Yard? After exploring how we use our outdoor spaces during our first <a fr-original-style="" href="https://transitionkamloops.net/nature-friendly-yards-design-charrette-starting-with-how-we-live/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Nature-Friendly Yards design charrette</a>, our next step is learning how to assess the ecological health of our yards. Join us in Sagebrush as we explore the <a fr-original-style="" href="https://kamloopsnaturalistclub.com/grow-wild/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: currentcolor; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Grow Wild Yard Assessment</a>, a practical tool developed by the Kamloops Naturalist Club to help residents evaluate the ecological health of their properties. Together we will look at habitat, biodiversity, pollinator support, water management, tree canopy, and ecological connections within our neighbourhoods. This session will take place in a local resident&#39;s yard and will begin with a tour of the garden, including the goals, challenges, successes, and lessons learned along the way. We will then work through the Grow Wild evaluation rubric as a group and explore how different landscape features contribute to a healthier and more nature-friendly yard. Whether you are just beginning your nature-friendly yard journey or already have an established garden, this session will provide practical tools to help you understand where your yard is today and identify opportunities for improvement. Nature-Friendly Yards -- Grow Wild Rubric.

Ready to turn your yard into a space that&rsquo;s good for birds, bees, and people too? 🐝🌱Transition Kamloops&rsquo; Nature-Friendly Yards Project invites you to a nature-friendly yards design charrette on Wednesday, May 27 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in Westsyde. Please arrive by 5:45 p.m. so we can get settled and begin on time. A design charrette is a collaborative brainstorming workshop where people come together to contribute ideas, knowledge, creativity, and questions around a shared project. In this case, we will be gathering in a real front yard space with guidance from Shelaigh from EveryOne&rsquo;s Eden Regenerative Land Design. Shelaigh will have a map of the garden space prepared, and together we will explore ideas and possibilities for transforming the garden using participants&rsquo; observations and ideas. We will also provide books and old magazines to support discussion and spark creativity. Everyone is welcome. Observers and learners are encouraged, and no prior knowledge or gardening experience is required. By observing and participating in the design process, participants can learn more about how nature-friendly landscapes are planned and created. The goal of this garden transformation is to create a landscape that better supports pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects while exploring practical and beautiful approaches to nature-friendly yard design. Registration is required, spaces will be capped at 20 participants, location will be shared one day prior to the event. Please register here. Vegetarian pizza will be provided. Hello Friends, As the gardening season winds down, it&#39;s tempting to tidy everything away. But many pollinators and other beneficial insects spend the winter tucked into hollow stems, leaf litter, standing seed heads, and undisturbed soil. Join us for an evening with Elaine Sedgman of the Thompson Shuswap Master Gardeners as we explore how our gardens can provide overwintering habitat for a wide range of beneficial insects. Using her own yard as an example, Elaine will discuss:<ul fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;"><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Where beneficial insects spend the winter</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Which plants and garden features provide important habitat</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Fall garden practices that help, rather than harm, insects</li><li fr-original-style="" style="box-sizing: inherit;">Practical ways to balance a tidy garden with healthy wildlife habitat</li></ul>We&rsquo;ll also take a short walk to Janis&rsquo;s nearby yard to see a swale she had dug in her front yard to channel water and snowmelt from her driveway. The area is now being re-vegetated, replacing a large section of lawn. Whether you&#39;re just getting started or have been gardening for years, you&#39;ll leave with practical ideas you can put into practice this fall. Nature-Friendly Yards Event 2.1: Overwintering Beneficial Insects

Nature-Friendly Yards is back for Season 2! We&rsquo;re kicking off our fall season with a field trip to Notch Hill Community Growers, a permaculture-inspired farm in the South Shuswap. We&rsquo;ll explore several different approaches to growing with nature, including their xeriscape garden, Miyawaki forest, and ongoing conversion of annual beds to a Syntropic Food Forest. We&rsquo;ll also head up the hillside to see how they have been working to increase organic matter in the soil to help it hold more water. It&rsquo;s a chance to see these approaches in practice, ask questions, and consider what ideas we might adapt to our own yards. Getting there and carpooling Notch Hill Community Growers is near Sorrento, so we encourage participants to carpool from Kamloops. If you can offer a ride or need a ride, let us know when you register and we&rsquo;ll help connect participants before the event. Please bring water, comfortable walking shoes, and clothing appropriate for the weather. Carpooling information, and final details will be sent to registered participants before the event.
