Unit/Pitt Society For Art And Critical Awareness

LXCL:UNIT/PITT Society for Art and Critical Awareness&nbsp;is a charitable non-profit artist-run organization located on the traditional and unceded territories of the Musqueam, Tsleil-Waututh and Squamish First Nations, in Vancouver BC at 2954 West 4th Avenue. We present exhibitions, workshops, film screenings, and special events in our gallery and outdoor garden space.

Navel of the M&ouml;bius ::: Experiments in Continuous Deformation&nbsp; Pairs of collaborators will enter into a &lsquo;sonic topological space,&rsquo; whose limits, continuity and connectivity emerge and morph through the contingent interplay of the performers&rsquo; shared signals and take shape by way of attuned listening and response. &nbsp; Each person in a duo will have part of their sound sources fed into the other&rsquo;s setup such that the setups generate their own responses to the signals. From the non-random but non-measurable sound that emerges, the gear becomes somewhat of a third collaborator (or... the M&ouml;bius&rsquo; navel), guiding the listening and response of improvisers through its own twisted structure of continuous deformation. c.a.f.f Session 5: ረብሻRebsha (Feven Kidane + Nebyu Yohannes)

In this hands-on workshop presented in collaboration with Sam Olsen (<a fr-original-style="" href="http://instagram.com/greasydart/" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: initial; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Greasy Dart</a>, <a fr-original-style="" href="http://instagram.com/thegreasyzine/?hl=en" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: initial; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Greasy Zine</a>) we&#39;ll explore how archiving the artifacts of our important relationships&mdash;blood and chosen family&mdash;can inform future generations about how we show love, care, and reciprocity. Participants are invited to bring an item that carries personal significance, to be photographed using Polaroid film and collaged in real time using a Polaroid Emulsion Lift Technique. With consent from attendees, archival content derived from the previous <a fr-original-style="" href="https://www.unitpitt.ca/portfolio/50/#workshops" rel="noopener noreferrer" style="text-decoration-color: initial; user-select: auto; box-sizing: inherit;" target="_blank">Visioning Futures workshop</a> will be incorporated into the collage. While participants from Visioning Futures are especially encouraged to attend and work with their materials personally, this session is open to the broader public, and welcome expansive themes and focuses. About the artist: Samuel Olsen is a multidisciplinary artist experimenting primarily in fine art fashion portraiture under the alias Greasy Dart. With high impact colours driving his intuitive aesthetic, Greasy builds each artistic endeavour on a foundation of collaboration and body neutrality, allowing him to authentically uplift the queer, sexwork, and Indigenous communities. Greasy can be found playing in his studio on Davie Street, or covering a variety of queer-centric events across the lower mainland, Victoria, and beyond.&nbsp; In the 2023 with the support of the BC Arts Council, Greasy launched the first full scale issue of Greasy Zine, Vancouver&rsquo;s premiere Queer and Indigenous Fashion Arts + Culture magazine. Released Annually, Greasy Zine aims to feature bold and unapologetic artists who are moving cultures needle forward through mixed media collaborative works. In doing so, Greasy aims to create opportunities for under represented artists, and archive the works of his peers. Poetry Workshop with Lauren Peat Suggested donations $10-$25.Proceeds will be split between Lauren Peat and UNIT/PITT. Poetry loves to drift, curve, and change directions. Inviting these qualities into our revision practice&mdash;in other words, loosening our grip&mdash;can help us work with &ldquo;stubborn&rdquo; poems: the ones that resist our efforts, that still seem so far from where we&rsquo;d like them to be. In this 1.5 hour workshop, we&rsquo;ll explore unclenching our approach to the page and tuning into poetry&#39;s wild, playful, and sinuous impulses. Participants will be offered a variety of strategies for this purpose and may (optionally) choose to bring one of their own &quot;stubborn&quot; poems to experiment with. Lauren Peat&#39;s debut poetry chapbook, Future Tense,&nbsp;was recently published by Baseline Press. Her poems, essays, and translations have appeared in Arc Poetry Magazine, Asymptote, Only Poems, The Malahat Review, The New Quarterly,&nbsp;and World Literature Today,&nbsp;among other places. Her writing is also featured in the repertoire of acclaimed vocal ensembles across North America.

Loosening our Grip: Working with "Stubborn" Poems

Join us for an evening of jazz and commiserating, featuring the jazz stylings of Vancouver’s Ben Frost on trumpet, accompanied by Chris Fraser on guitar, and Miles Wong on drums.  Entrance is $15 suggested donation, RSVP or at the door. Donations go towards supporting the performers and UNIT/PITT. Ben Frost is a trumpet player and composer based in Vancouver, BC. Ben has performed on concert stages and festivals across Canada, his unique, thoughtful writing and lyrical approach to the instrument making him a mainstay in the Vancouver jazz scene. He completed his Bachelor’s of Music Degree at Capilano University and holds a Master’s of Music Degree in Jazz Performance from the University of Toronto, where he studied with Brad Turner, Jim Lewis, and Andrew Downing.

We will showcase a selection of film clips, interviews, and documentation of Lynch's non-filmic performative work that reflects the depth and breadth of his singular contribution to art and filmmaking. The screening will be accompanied by a discussion featuring local artists from the community sharing personal reflections on Lynch's influence on their own creative practices. The Garden as Teacher, Collaborator, Friend: an Invitation with LoriAnn Bird

Christians is an improv project that appears in various configurations led by Vancouver guitarist Jeremy Stewart. This trio performance will also feature bassist Oli Shakur and percussionist Wayne Adams. The group translates the sonic vocabulary of metal, blues, and punk into the musical language of free improvisation.  "...This is edge-of-seat music linking many extreme styles and melting them into a glorious mess"         — Marc Masters, Best Experimental Music on Bandcamp [Christians’ S/Z is] “splendidly fiery… close to the ideal of what fusion can be”         — Byron Coley, The Wire Jeremy Stewart is a guitarist who has performed various metal, punk, noise, and folk styles including as lead guitarist for Lheidli T'enneh Elder Marcel Gagnon. WIth his project Christians, Jeremy has shared stages or collaborated with artists like Oxbow, Lightning Bolt, Lori Goldston, Stanley Jason Zappa, among many others. He is the artistic director of Casse-Tête: A Festival of Experimental Music.  Oli Shakur inhabits a mad, queer, Brown settler body that has appeared as an elusive and mercurial utility player in creative music, noise, punk, jazz, and the institutional avant-garde over the last thirty years. Oli currently plays in the improv duo Ears of Lead and jazz quartet Big Shoulders; the noise project Guilty Of Being White By Minor Threat will debut in 2025. Wayne Adams' music career has been spent exploring the outer boundaries of punk, folk and jazz as a longtime member of Zolty Cracker and Geoff Berner's band. Loopy Lounge carves out space for fibre crafters of diverse backgrounds to come together, meet other crafters and craft together while raising funds for a cause.&nbsp; Bring your current projects, or start something new with materials from our community stash. We&rsquo;ll be crafting under the sunshine in UNIT/PITT&rsquo;s beautiful garden&mdash;abundant with blooming flowers and blossoming veggies&mdash;serenaded by the magical tunes of Jefferson Alade.&nbsp; This month, we are raising funds for [TBD].
