YXE Cree Speakers Society

The YXE Cree Speakers Society is dedicated to revitalizing the Plains Cree language and culture through community-driven initiatives, educational conferences, and collaborative efforts that honor ancestral teachings and promote cultural resilience.

Year 4 of the pimâcihitâtân nêhiyawêwin: Keep Our Language Alive Conference coming upon us, this past year has been a time of reflection on how and why this conference came to be. As a grassroots movement, we have worked hard to respect our n&ecirc;hiyaw teachings in every step of the process while providing an achievable and meaningful learning experience for all. This humble project started as a two-year project with the first year funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage. Since Year I costs have been covered solely through personal fundraising efforts and registration fees. The project purpose was to identify lessons learned from past language development strategies and to create an inventory of existing strategies for the purpose of introducing innovative products to support the Plains Cree (Y dialect) language development and retention. Year II was the first year of the pimācīhitatān nēhiyawēwin: Keep Our Language Alive conference where the inventory and findings from the consultations was shared. The theme of the 2026 Western regional conference&nbsp;is focused on the 150th Commemoration of Treaty Number Six and how the concept of Treaty is not new to the original peoples of this land and how the current Numbered Treaties between First Nations and the Crown were not intended to eradicate our ancestral cultures and languages. To this day, descendants of the original Treaty makers understood that all rights that existed before Europeans came, still exist. With this understanding the conference theme is about promoting our Creator given right to practice our culture and language as Cree people, respecting each&rsquo;s diversity. This year&rsquo;s gathering is especially meaningful as it coincides with the 150th anniversary of Treaty No. 6&nbsp;&ndash; a living agreement rooted in kinship, mutual responsibility, and the sacred promise to protect future generations. Our conference centers Cree language revitalization as both an act of resurgence and fulfillment of Treaty responsibilities.&nbsp;
