A challenging work, it is known as a &quot;visionary&quot; piece. Bruckner is well known for his ceaseless editing. The vocal parts of the piece were mostly completed in 1868 or 1869, its premiere performance was in 1872, but he didn&#39;t complete his edits of the orchestration until 1893. History tells us that, at the 1893 performance of the Mass, Johannes Brahms applauded so enthusiastically that Bruckner personally thanked him. What an honour that must have been.
