« EN FINIR AVEC LA POLIO » Pour le concert Une Saint-Valentin avec Clara Schumann, les clubs Rotary de la région de Québec s’associent à l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec, dans le cadre de la campagne « En finir avec la polio » en mettant en vente 400 billets, dont les profits iront directement à la cause. Aussi, une captation en direct rendant possible le visionnement en webdiffusion dans plusieurs pays permettra à l’organisation la vente de billets supplémentaires. Le concert restera disponible en ligne jusqu’au 24 février 2023. Pour l’occasion, la veuve du défunt chef d’Orchestre James DePreist fera honneur de sa présence. Une occasion d’honorer la mémoire du défunt directeur musical de l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec de 1976 à 1983, lui-même atteint de la polio. Sommité mondiale de la musique, DePreist est un symbole de la lutte pour l’égalité, notamment en ce qui concerne les droits des personnes à mobilité réduite. « En 1978, lorsque j’étais enfant, j’ai eu l’immense privilège de voir le grand James DePreist à la tête de l’Orchestre. Se déplaçant difficilement, affligé par la polio, il dirigeait cependant les musiciens avec un tel enthousiasme, une profonde rigueur et un sourire si communicatif que j’en garde encore des souvenirs impérissables. C’est donc avec beaucoup de nostalgie que l’équipe de l’Orchestre et moi avons accepté de nous joindre au Rotary dans leur souhait d’éradiquer la polio. Cette collaboration nous permet une fois de plus de démontrer le rôle de leader social de l’Orchestre tout en permettant la démocratisation de la musique symphonique », explique Mme Astrid Chouinard, présidente-directrice générale de l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec.« Cette cause me touche au plus haut point peut-être parce que mon père en a souffert étant jeune. Fort heureusement, il n’en a gardé aucune séquelle. Lorsque Marc-André m’a approché, pour contribuer à lever des fonds et pour l’hommage à James DePreist, j’ai embarqué dans le projet immédiatement. Surtout que j’avais déjà assisté à un concert bénéfice du Rotary pour mettre fin à la polio à Chicago dont le chef invité était James DePreist, en 2011. Même si le Rotary international a aidé à réduire de 99,9 % la poliomyélite depuis 1979 par des campagnes de vaccination partout dans le monde, cette maladie est toujours une endémie en Afghanistan et au Pakistan. Donc, il faut encore des fonds pour éradiquer complètement ce virus qui affecte toujours gravement des enfants. Comme disait Maestro DePreist en 2011 “Un cas est un cas de trop. Nous devons penser à soutenir le Rotary, car lorsque vous soutenez le Rotary, vous soutenez l’éradication de la polio”. » Dino Marzaro, Gouverneur nommé district 7790 (2024-2025).  Le club Rotary Luttant contre la poliomyélite depuis plus de 35 ans, le club Rotary a contribué de manière considérable, pour éliminer définitivement cette maladie de la planète. En tant que partenaire de l'Initiative mondiale pour l'éradication de la polio, il a aidé à réduire les cas de polio de plus de 99,9 pour cent.

« ENDING POLIO » The Rotary Clubs of the Quebec City region are partnering with l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec to present the concert "A Valentine's Day with Clara Schumann" as part of the "End Polio Now" campaign. The proceeds from the sale of the 400 tickets will go directly to the fight against polio. In addition, a live webcast of the concert will allow the organization to sell additional tickets in several countries. The concert will remain available online until February 24th, 2023.This will also be a great opportunity to honour the memory of James DePreist, music director of the Orchestre symphonique de Québec from 1976 to 1983, who was himself afflicted with polio. We are happy to announce that his widow has confirmed she will be present for the occasion. Mr. DePreist was not only a world-renowned musician, but also a symbol of the struggle for equality, particularly with regard to the rights of persons with reduced mobility.“In 1978, when I was a child, I had the privilege of seeing the great James DePreist conduct the Orchestra. Although he was afflicted by polio and was struggling to move about, he always had a wonderful smile and conducted the orchestra with such enthusiasm and thoroughness that I still have vivid memories of him. It is therefore with great pleasure that the Orchestra has agreed to join forces with the Rotary Foundation in their efforts to eradicate polio. This collaboration also allows us to demonstrate once again the Orchestra's role as a community leader and to contribute to the democratization of symphonic music”, explains Astrid Chouinard, CEO of l’Orchestre symphonique de Québec.Dino Marzaro, elected Governor for the Rotary Club’s District 7790 for 2024-2025, declares: “This cause touches me deeply, because my father suffered from it when he was young, although fortunately, it did not have any lasting consequences on him. When Marc-André approached me to help raise funds and pay tribute to James DePreist, I got on board immediately, especially since I had already attended a Rotary Club benefit concert to end polio in Chicago with James DePreist as guest conductor in 2011. Even though Rotary International has helped reduce poliomyelitis by 99.9% since 1979 through vaccination campaigns around the world, the disease remains endemic in countries such as Afghanistan and Pakistan. Therefore, funds are still needed to completely eradicate this virus that continues to seriously affect children. As maestro DePreist said in 2011: "Any single case is one case too many.
