SS Atlantic 150 Anniversary Gala Reception

Join the SS Atlantic Heritage Park Society and the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21 in marking the 150th anniversary year of the largest shipwreck in Nova Scotia history.

The 150th Anniversary Gala Reception will be evening of story-telling and musical entertainment. Remarks will be made by Mayor Mike Savage, the Ambassador of Ireland to Canada, Eamonn McKee and a history talk will be given by author Bob Chaulk. Entertainment will be provided by the Rob Brown Band, Rosalee Peppard Lockyer, Diaga Irish Dance, Sheila Lamplugh, Rosalyn Umlah, Sharon Resky and many more.

The story of the SS Atlantic, largely overshadowed by the sinking of Titanic, is a story of courage and collaboration on the part of several coastal communities who answered the call when a passenger ship carrying 950 people hit rocks off the coast of Lower Prospect on April 1, 1873. The rescue efforts that ensued are nothing short of heroic as local fishers dragged boats into the water and picked people from the icy Atlantic. For months after the disaster these community members had to deal with the aftermath of the tragedy, identifying and properly burying victims in two cemeteries in Terence Bay.
