Critical Psychiatry Conference – Sixth EditionLa dureté moyenne de séjourAs the title suggests, this 6th Critical Psychiatry Conference will address the issue of psychiatric reception and care at a time when statistics and economic issues prevail. Indeed, we find it important, this year, to address the clinical consequences of the neoliberalization of our institutions and our societies: cuts in beds and “outsourcing of services”, caregivers’ suffering and staff shortages, obsession with effectiveness and durations of stay, centralisation of decision-making powers, management techniques imported from the industrial sector, etc. It seems to us that psychiatry, already historically tightened between clinical care and social control, now has to cope with a new factor, that of the growing crushing of the social fabric and the impoverishment of public institutions. The psychiatrist, accustomed to being stretched between positions of keeper and doctor, in the same movement as the institution in which he exercises, today risks being assigned to a new role: that of manager. Manager of behavior, manager of symptoms, manager of output rights, etc. And through the mirror, the “sick,” once locked up or abandoned, will now have to be managed. But you don’t need to be an experienced clinician to understand that a being, in its complexity, cannot be “managed”. It would therefore remain that hope, supported by the neuroscience discourse, that its symptoms, they, can be adequately managed. Thus, while it was once locked up or abandoned as an individual subject, the “mad” will now be managed as a cluster of symptomatic manifestations, as a constellation of dysfunctions and abnormalities calling each their therapeutic technique or specialized program. He'll be treated in seperated pieces, exactly like on an assembly line.  So the questions that will go through this year’s conference will be: Why this mechanization of psychiatric care? Who does it benefit? Should we resist this trend, and if so, how? How can psychiatric reception and care be maintained despite environmental neoliberalization and the managerial climate? To draw up an answer, we found it important to give the floor to people who have thought about this issue, both inside and outside the care facilities, in Quebec and elsewhere. We also plan a discussion/debate session at the end of the day. Overall Learning Objectives By attending the conference, participants should be able to :<ul><li>Identify social and political influences within healthcare institutions</li><li>Recognize the impact of language on the comprehension of the psyche</li><li>Promote interdisciplinary collaboration</li></ul>What is Critical Psychiatry?  Critical psychiatry is a rapidly expanding field of research and clinical practice that aims to take a step back from the economic, social, and administrative interests that influence mental health. Starting from an ethical foundation and a critical reading of the scientific literature, this branch of psychiatry attempts to bring to light certain dogmas of the practice of psychiatry, with the aim of creating space for innovation and improved patient care. Adopting a vision that brings together neuroscience, philosophy, sociology, history, and anthropology, Critical Psychiatry gives a new perspective on the problems of mental health by promoting a better understanding of the clinical issues of our era. Given the growing interest in this stream of current and future psychiatry, it is crucial for Quebec's clinicians to have a forum in which they can gain exposure to it.  This introduction to the issues of critical psychiatry will bring together experts in the field for a one-day symposium. Then, he worked as a hospital practician in different psychiatry services: emergency, general psychiatry, department of autism, consultation-liaison and consultation for migrant patients. Since 2022, he is retired while still working part time in a consultation center working with Hôpital de Saint-Cyr-au-Mont-d’Or. Alongside, he published literary works beginning in 1991 Portrait de fleuve, Gallimard). His experience and reflections as a psychiatrist nourished an abundance of his work : : Précis de médecine imaginaire (Verdier 2005) ; Ferdière, psychiatre d’Antonin Artaud (Verdier 2006) ; Marcher droit, tourner en rond (Verdier 2016) ; Observations en trois lignes (La Fosse aux ours, 2020) ; Schizogrammes (La Fosse aux ours, 2022) ; La Lumière, l’encre et l’usure du mobilier (Gallimard 2023). In 2020, he also published a short book exposing the economic and intellectual impoverishment of the ‘’neo-psychiatry”, », Manifeste pour une psychiatrie artisanale (Verdier). He also contributed to various journals (La NRF, Les Temps modernes, L’Ouroboros) and to collective works, often on themes intertwining literature and psychiatry (Artaud, Michaux, Bernanos, Thomas Bernhard). His last novel was published by Éditions Verdier in January 2024, titled Contrefeu. In the midst of clinical and political reflexions, he will speek about the theme of “destruction de la psychiatrie publique” (title of a recently released paper published in the Monde Diplomatique.) He is also an associate professor at the département de psychologie de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). I offered services in multiple clinical contexts, including in the emergency department, in community intervention teams (SIV or SIM), on psychiatric care units and in accommodation services. Throughout my career, I dedicated myself to peoples living with mental health issues that where often invasive, persistant and interfered with their functioning, their place in our society and/or their well-being. Im a passioned about rehabilitation and I often see hope when others find it difficult to see any. It is crucial for me that people without voices are heard. I stayed interested in defending the rights, promoting life plans and destimatizing people living in marginalized situations.  More and more, we realize the collective suffering, the shortage and the the exhaustion of the professional throughout our healthcare system.
