Scenes from the Nanaimo Indian Hospital: Reawakening Hul’q’umin’um’, Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwak’wala Languages a play by Laura CranmerDr. Laura Cranmer of ‘Namgis and Haida descent, an Indian hospital and residential school survivor, wrote “Scenes from the Nanaimo Indian Hospital” based on her three-year stay at the hospital as a young child. In this staged reading, the Nanaimo Indian Hospital is re-imagined to be the confluence of the Island’s great linguistic diversity embodied by the three young girls—Dorothy Myth representing Kwak’wala, Esther Williams representing Hul’q’umin’um’, and Mary Robins representing Nuu-chah-nulth—whose growing friendship in Ward B consists of delight in language comparisons while sinister medical undercurrents are revealed in the dialogue and action between the medical staff. This applied theatre research project centers on Indigenous language reawakening.Warning: Mature content. Mental health support workers will be available for survivors & audience members.Post-show talk in the theatre.

Scenes from the Nanaimo Indian Hospital: Reawakening Hul’q’umin’um’, Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwak’wala Languages a play by Laura Cranmer On behalf of the research team responsible for the production of Laura Cranmer’s play, “Scenes from the Nanaimo Indian Hospital: Reawakening Hul’q’umin’um’, Nuu-chah-nulth and Kwak’wala languages through theater” we invite you to attend the staged reading on March 28th at the Malaspina Theatre at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo. Vancouver Island University’s mandate includes support for Indigenous-led research projects within the framework of Truth and Reconciliation. In this light, the applied theatre research team consists of Daisy Elliott, (BA in Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies, MA in Community Planning in progress) and works as Indian Residential School Survivor Society counselling lead, Ann Woodward (BA in Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies) works as Research Coordinator for the arc: the Art, Research, Community Center at Vancouver Island University (VIU), Dr. Amanda Wager, works as Canada Research Chair Tier II at VIU, and Dr. Laura Cranmer, Indigenous/Xwulmuxw Studies faculty (retired) and Honorary Research Associate with VIU. The Malaspina Theatre has generously made space available for the rehearsal and performance days of the staged reading for “Scenes from the Nanaimo Indian Hospital” which centres on the growing friendship between three little girls in Ward B. The reading will take place on Thursday, March 28th for a 1:00pm matinee and 6:30pm evening performance with a post-performance talk with the playwright, cast and crew. Tickets are free of charge for this event.
