The ASF Adaptive Kayaking Program is offered from June to September mainly in Estrie, but also sometimes elsewhere in Quebec. Here at the ASF we support, encourage and provide opportunities for people with physical disabilities to practice adaptive kayaking. We aim to allow participants to move independently through their own effort. The adapted kayak allows participants to leave chairs and canes on the shore and explore the beautiful shores of our lakes and rivers. Our kayaks have been fitted with supportive seats, outriggers for added stability and specialized paddles to take the strain off your upper body and make paddling easier, even with just one arm. This program is open to anyone with mobility issues. Volunteers are an important part of the program. Collective volunteer training takes place at the start of the season and also individually throughout the summer months. Volunteers help out on shore, help with safety, move equipment and assist with transfers. On the water, volunteers are also necessary because each kayaker is accompanied by one or two support kayaks to ensure safety. There will be a volunteer on shore at all times with “eyes on the water”.

August 19th ASF Kayak Program

Offert de juin à septembre principalement en Estrie, mais aussi parfois ailleurs au Québec. Ici, au programme de kayak adapté de la FSA, nous soutenons, encourageons et offrons aux personnes ayant un handicap physique des opportunités de pratiquer le kayak adapté. Nous avons pour objectif de permettre aux participants de se déplacer de manière indépendante grâce à leur propre effort. Le kayak adapté permet aux participants de laisser des chaises et des cannes sur le rivage et d'explorer les magnifiques rivages de nos lacs et rivières. Nos kayaks ont été adaptés avec des sièges de soutien, des stabilisateurs pour plus de stabilité et des pagaies spécialisées pour éliminer la tension du haut du corps et permettre de pagayer plus aisément, même avec un seul bras. Ce programme est ouvert à toutes les personnes qui ont des problèmes de mobilité. Les bénévoles sont un élément important du programme. Des entraînements collectifs de bénévoles ont lieu en début de saison et aussi individuellement tout au long de la saison. Les bénévoles aident sur le rivage, aident à la sécurité, à déplacer l'équipement et aider aux transferts. Sur l'eau, les bénévoles sont également nécessaires car, chaque kayakiste est accompagné d'un ou deux kayaks de support pour assurer la sécurité. Il y aura un bénévole sur le rivage en tout temps avec « les yeux sur l'eau ».
