Starting bid

Valued at $1,700. Minimum bid increment $25. Well known Elora and now Atlantic Canadian artist sold in galleries across Canada and in the US. After 34 years in beautiful Elora, it was time for change. We’ve settled home and studio in Nova Scotia, close to our granddaughter, the best studio distraction. Influenced by the rugged landscape, my work has a new collage style, combining hard-edged acrylics with found wood. This technique also influences my stainless steel paintings. I feel drawn to the spiritual focus of the surrounding land. Walking, and doing watercolour sketches, are often the starting point for new large scale pieces. If your travels bring to NS, let me know and drop by for a visit. The studio is open by appointment.

$150

Starting bid

Valued at $1,600. Minimum bid increment $50. Susan Strachan Johnson – A Moment in time: First Born Daughters – hanging tapestry 31 x 15. Originally trained as a painter, Susan has worked in fiber art and gained her City and Guild Diploma in Textile Art. Her work has been shown by invitation at the 2003 Biennali in Florence, Thread Works 2004 and 2007, the Grand National Quilt Show at the Kitchener Waterloo Art Gallery each year from 2007 to 2011. One particular work of Susan's, “A Soldier's Life at the Front 1914-1918” is on permanent display at the Wellington County Museum and Archives. She also offers workshops in fibre art techniques throughout Southern Ontario. This quilt is about generations of my family, and shows me with my mother, Isobel June Bernstein, my grandmother Isobel Margaret Forsell, my great-grandmother Clara Whatton Mary Butt, and my daughter Sophie June Helroise Johnson. Sophie, my mother and I are all first-born daughters; we are all living, and are all artists. I made this quilt for a show called The Spaces lnBetween. It is based on a painting I did several years ago, of a cliff face in Rockwood Conservation Area. The cracks in the rock resemble spirit figures when the shadows are just right; the silk bars represent the time and space that separates me from Sophie and my mother - the spaces in between.
