Two-day: Bee Biology and Identification Workshop Dates: July 19th and 20th, 2024 Locations: Kokanee Creek Nature Centre and Beaver Creek Provincial Park Have you always wanted to know how to ID the amazing diversity of bees buzzing around your flowers? Where do they nest, what do they eat, and how can you support them? Join our Bee Biology and Identification workshop! This two-day session will start in the classroom to provide you with identification strategies for common native bees, as well as in depth information on their nesting, overwintering, and flower preferences! The following day we will go on a “Bee Quest”, exploring local natural areas and observing bees and their habitat in the field. This workshop is suitable for beginner to intermediate students and will focus on recognizing common bumble bee species and common solitary bee genera. We will be examining bee specimens using low magnification digital microscopes, focusing on features that can be observed in the field and in photographs. In the field we will discuss the use of iNaturalist and the NBSBC’s BC Bee Atlas as tools for supporting native bees. We will also look for examples of important native bee habitat features and discuss practical habitat conservation measures that community members can take. Bonnie Zand is an RPBio based out of the Comox Valley. She works in the intersections of pollination and agriculture, running an IPM consulting company and leading the Pollinators in Vancouver Island Agriculture Project. Bonnie is also a board member of the Native Bee Society of BC and is the BC instructor for the Master Melittologist Program. In her free time she plants for native bees, and raises goats, garlic and a seven year old  on her hobby farm. This registration greatly helps our mission. Day One: July 19th, 2024. Mini Bee School Classroom, will run from 9:30am to 4:30pm at the Kokanee Creek Nature House. Please bring water, lunch, snacks and writing utensils.  Day Two: July 20th, 2024. Bee Quest, will run from 9:00am to 2:00pm. We will meet at Beaver Creek Provincial Park at the day use shelter to start our quest! We'll head where the quest takes us, with the intention of making it to the Pend d'Orielle River, a two hour hike south. Please wear weather appropriate clothing and comfortable shoes. Please bring lots of water, lunch, snacks, a hat, sunscreen, writing utensils and a clipboard.
