Join us to celebrate and support community-based biodiversity research! All events are by donation excluding the ticketed banquet event. The schedule for weekend is as follows: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 4th (for those on island or arriving the day prior to the main event): 6pm, <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/PWC7imJKxoqBNZkTA" target="_blank">Sum'nuw</a>: Meet at Sum'nuw (Montague Harbour Marine Provincial Park) for an optional 2.5 km walk and knowledge sharing. SATURDAY, OCTOBER 5th (MAIN EVENT): 10am, <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/EVNp9T5zUjJXBCbYA" target="_blank">Whaler Bay</a>: Come see the<a href="https://imerss.org/2024/08/15/sentinels-of-change/" target="_blank"> Sentinels of Change</a> “crab baby” light traps with Jeannine Georgeson. Sentinels of Change is a community-centered initiative investigating patterns of invertebrate biodiversity change and resilience across the Salish Sea. The project is led by the Hakai Institute and is supported by a network of community partners working together to observe patterns of invertebrate reproduction and recruitment in the region. 11am-5:30pm, <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/KZ7YqpqZQRGxYM3c7" target="_blank">Galiano Inn</a>: Join Dr. Elaine Humphrey for a<a href="https://imerss.org/2020/07/20/community-marine-biology/" target="_blank"> Community Scanning Electron Microscopy Lab</a>. Bring any object of wonder and gaze upon it with the power of electrons! 12pm-4pm, <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/HD3YWTFVba8q9gPy7" target="_blank">Yellowhouse Art Centre</a>: Join us for the opening of the<a href="https://imerss.org/2019/01/01/ecocultural-mapping-pilot/" target="_blank"> Xetthecum</a> exhibit. The Xetthecum pilot project weaves together Indigenous ways of knowing and Western ecological science into an ecocultural map of Retreat Cove (Xetthecum in the Hul’qumi’num language), Galiano Island, BC. Previous community-based mapping projects conducted on Galiano Island will be featured alongside this exhibit, including<a href="https://galianoconservancy.ca/climate/one-island/" target="_blank"> One Island, One Earth</a> by the Galiano Conservancy Association,<a href="https://www.thewaterwecallhome.com/" target="_blank"> Water We Call Home</a> by Rosemary Georgeson, and more. 5pm, <a href="https://maps.app.goo.gl/KZ7YqpqZQRGxYM3c7" target="_blank">Galiano Inn</a>: Join for a ticketed event including a panel discussion, a 3 course dinner, and a silent auction featuring the beautiful world of marine diatoms. The panel discussion theme is Centering Indigenous Knowledges in Community Science, Scholarship, and Art with the following panelists: Niiyokamigaabaw Deondre Smiles, Rosemary Georgeson, Jessica Hallenbeck, Kusemaat Shirley Williams, and Briony Penn. The Salish Sea Diatoms: an Art and Science Silent Auction exhibition will be on display at the Galiano Inn from September 5th to October 8th. All artwork is up for auction on<a href="https://www.zeffy.com/ticketing/e4093561-f3b4-4def-8f61-0c8afe495f1a"> Zeffy</a> and bids end on October 8th at noon.
