La pratique artistique de Wil Murray explore les langages théoriques qui pourraient exister entre les médias, soit des pidgins fugaces utilisés pour la communication entre des groupes ne partageant pas une langue commune. Pour parler pidgin, un médium doit perdre du poids et de la valeur et s’exprimer simplement dans un présent pimenté d’onomatopées et de gestes. Dans le cadre de cette série, Murray présente des oeuvres qui requièrent un pidgin. Après avoir photographié, à l’aide d’un film grand format masqué, les ombres de coups de pinceau sur une fenêtre, il peint sur les négatifs développés qu’il scanne et qu’il imprime. Il s’agit ainsi de l’enregistrement d’un langage rendu inutile par le temps qui passe.
Wil Murray a étudié la peinture à l’Alberta College of Art and Design. Il vit et travaille actuellement à Berlin. Parmi ses expositions récentes, citons Keep Your Eyes Peeled (AFF Galerie, Berlin), THE ONLYES POWER IS NO POWER (Vitrine, Londres), On Invasive Species and Infidelity (The Art Gallery of Alberta, Edmonton), NOT A PHOTO (The Hole, New York) et If it’s not meant to last, then it’s Performance (Vitrine, Bâle). En 2008, il reçoit une mention honorable au Concours de peinture canadienne RBC. Son travail a été présenté à la Biennale d’art contemporain de l’Alberta en 2015 et en 2017.
