A Brief History of Smoking Cigarettes by Deanna Jones - Recording Party! For one week, Deanna Jones alongside collaborating artists and friends will spend time in the studio to workshop her original play-in-development, A Brief History of Smoking Cigarettes (Working Title). With support from an Ontario Arts Council's theatre projects grant, and in association with Suitcase in Point, Deanna continues to further develop her highly original, deeply personal and insanely hilarious play. Come and see what comes of a week of experimentation with the script, lights, video, music, puppets and more! These two special shows are also a welcome opportunity to re-do the play in the most perfect setting, Oddfellows Hall. This “Recording Party” will capture where this play began and where it is now, as it continues to develop and tour to unique venues and theatres in 2026.   About the play:A Brief History of Smoking Cigarettes follows Deanna’s personal history with cigarettes and quite impossibly, THE ENTIRE GLOBAL HISTORY of cigarettes, in a one-woman show that uses old tech, puppets, live tunes, photographs and everything in between to convey how SPECTACULAR the play will be when it eventually gets funded by “Big Tobacco.” Testimonials from June 2024:“It is so funny and moving. She is a co-founder of Suitcase in Point Multi-Arts Company and continues as the company’s Artistic Director (2007-2026) She has toured to festivals nationally and internationally in her over-20 year experience as a professional artist. Her acclaimed play, The Keith Richards One Woman Show was nominated for a Dora award in 2015 and toured throughout Western Canada. In 2011 Deanna received the City of St. Catharines Emerging Artist of the Year Award and in 2024, she won the Making a Difference Award. She grew up in Welland Ontario and has a history of collaboration with hundreds of theatre, music, film, literary and installation artists.
