General Admission

Presented by the Russian Canadian Democratic Alliance (RCDA) in collaboration with the Raoul Wallenberg Centre for Human Rights 🗓 Friday, October 16 · Doors 6:00 pm 📍 Clark Venue (Maison du développement durable), 50 Sainte-Catherine Street West, Montreal 🎟 [Free / donation is encouraged] In April 2023, a Moscow court sentenced Vladimir Kara-Murza to 25 years in a strict-regime penal colony for speaking publicly against the war. It was the harshest sentence handed to a Kremlin critic in modern Russia. He had already survived two poisonings. In a Siberian colony, he was kept in solitary confinement while his health steadily failed, and his family had no certainty they would see him alive again.Over the same years, Evgenia Kara-Murza refused to let the world look away. She carried her husband's case, and the cases of prisoners no one had heard of, to parliaments, courts and international stages. In August 2024, Vladimir walked free in the largest prisoner exchange since the Cold War. Many others were not on that plane. Today Memorial recognizes 1,843 political prisoners in Russia, and more than 5,700 people are deprived of their liberty in politically motivated cases. According to the #free120 campaign, at least 72 prisoners of the Russian regime have died in prison or shortly after their release. Nine have died so far this year. Hundreds of political prisoners are living with cancer, tuberculosis, heart disease and other life-threatening conditions, and they are being denied the care that could save them.Vladimir and Evgenia know exactly what that means, because Vladimir was once one of them. On October 16, they come to Montreal to speak for those still inside. In Conversation: Vladimir & Evgenia Kara-Murza They know both sides of the prison wall: the one who waits in isolation as his body gives way, and the one who fights outside so the world won't forget. They'll speak about what reaches a prisoner in solitary and what it means when it does. They'll talk about what it took to get out, and about what people here in Canada can still do for those left behind. Bring your questions. Inside Out: Work-in-Progress Showcase Before the conversation, we'll share a first look at Inside Out, the film that was made with the support of RCDA. The film is based on a book by OVD-Info. It is built from letters between political prisoners and the strangers who decided to write to them. In books, weather, jokes made under censorship and hope that has to be rationed, you see what the system works hardest to erase: a person. The film is heading to festivals, and you'll be among the first to catch a glimpse. Afterwards, we invite you to write back. Share what moved you, what stayed with you, and what you'd want the world to see. Every response will be read, and your words will help shape the final cut. Faces of Russian Resistance The evening opens with an exhibit of portraits and stories of people imprisoned for what they said, wrote or refused to sign. It shows who they were before their arrest, and what they lost by not staying quiet. #free120: Save the Lives of Seriously Ill Political Prisoners RCDA is proud to stand with the international #free120 campaign, alongside OVD-Info, Memorial and Agora. The campaign demands the immediate release of critically ill political prisoners in Russia. It began with 120 names, and today the list holds 406. The youngest is 17 and the oldest is 79. Every one of them should be receiving treatment instead of serving a sentence. All funds raised at the event will go to:

Medical assistance for prisoners denied basic care

Legal defence and appeals for critically ill detainees

Support for prisoners' families, who carry the cost of parcels, travel and lawyers on their own

For a prisoner with cancer in a colony infirmary, a lawyer's appeal or a parcel of medication can be the difference between surviving the sentence and not.
