Always wanted to work with clay and ceramics? Wanting to make little creatures or build little bowls and cups from scratch? Come to our Handbuild Ceramics Workshop instructed by our studio members, Hannah Hashimoto and Diana Lupieri! This workshop covers basic techniques on handbuilding with clay, and provides all needed materials and tools. Through 1.5 hours, participants will create a unique piece of their own. After finishing, participants will leave their work to be fired at James Black Gallery and ready to picked up within a month's time. With the intention of reducing participant's barriers to art making, we have provided multiple options to tackle accessibility and cost barriers for folks who would not have chances to try out these activities otherwise. Please pay accordingly to your means - standard full rate when you can, and leave accessible options for folks who needs them. This initiative is made possible with the support of the City of Vancouver and BC Art Council. ABOUT US: James Black Gallery supports artistic practices and initiatives by and for for BIPOC, Queer, LGBT2S+, Newcomers and Immigrants, and Neurodivergent/Mad/Disabled artists and general audiences. Diana Lupieri is a multidisciplinary artist working across ceramics, illustration, and textile art. With several years of experience as a ceramics instructor and studio technician, Diana loves sharing her knowledge of clay and helping others bring their ideas to life. Her approach to handbuilding is all about getting hands-on, trying new things, and enjoying the process of making. Whether you’re new to ceramics or looking to explore your creativity, Diana hopes to make working with clay feel approachable, fun, and rewarding. When she’s not making art, you can often find her climbing or using her deep knowledge of coffee beans by making everyone a good cup of coffee. Hannah Hashimoto is a ceramic artist with several years of experience teaching workshops and introducing people to working with clay. Hannah enjoys helping people feel comfortable experimenting with clay, learning new skills, and discovering the satisfaction of making something by hand in workshops. Hannah’s ceramic practice includes a focus on atmospheric firing, exploring how flame and conditions inside the kiln interact with form to influence the finished piece. As Executive Director and ceramics technician at James Black Gallery (JBG), Hannah also co-leads the ceramics program, maintains and repairs the antique studio kilns, and makes the studio glazes. Alongside working in the arts, Hannah works full-time in healthcare.
