As the demand for inclusive behavioral services grows, BCBAs and other professionals are positioned to support historically underserved populations. Yet moving beyond initial training requires a careful balance of actions and ethical responsibility. Our panel will discuss transitioning into specialized areas of support including children and youth with brain injury, children and youth with Down syndrome, and students without a formal diagnosis in school settings. By analyzing ethical considerations and sharing firsthand insights into their daily roles, our panelists will outline actionable steps to ethically expand scope of practice, identify key mentoring structures required for successful transitions, and discuss potential continuing education resources and assessment tools. We are pleased to be offering 2 ethics CEU for this event at an additional cost. This event will be hosted live via Zoom, and it will be recorded for those who are not able to join live. Read on to learn more about our amazing panelists! Lauren Keating: Lauren Keating is a Behaviour Analyst who is passionate about increasing access and inclusion for ALL children and youth! Her career has spanned many contexts, working with children and the adults who support them in homes, clinics, public and independent schools, and community recreation settings. In each of these roles, Lauren’s goal has been the same; to empower adults with skills and knowledge, and to reduce barriers for children to receive the support they need to feel successful and connected. Since 2018, she has worked as a District Behaviour Analyst with the Delta School District. Lauren currently serves on the Board of Directors for the British Columbia Association for Behaviour Analysts. Katie Allen: Katie Allen, M.S., BCBA, is a master’s level Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) since 2005. Their Master of Science degree in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) was obtained through Northeastern University while working at the New England Center for Children, a leading day and residential program for Autistic children in the United States. They moved to Vancouver in 2006 to design and implement individualized ABA programs for children with developmental differences. Their focus in training and practice has been working with individuals who exhibit severe challenging behaviour including self-injurious behaviour, aggression, and property destruction within the contexts of home, school, community and residential treatment. Katie has been active as a board member of BC-ABA in the roles of President, Member at Large and Secretary. Since 2019 Katie has been working within the Provincial Health Services Authority at BC Children's Hospital with the Self-injurious Behavior Clinic alongside a multi-disciplinary team working to assess and treat children who engage in self-injurious behavior across the province. Sara Peralta: Sara (she/her) is a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA). She completed her undergraduate studies at the University of Calgary, and has a Master’s degree in Education with a focus on autism and other developmental disabilities from the University of British Columbia. While completing her undergraduate studies, Sara worked at the Down Syndrome Resource Foundation (DSRF) in the summer camp programs, and then later as a teacher assistant in the adult reading program. Sara was an assistant in Dr. Susan Fawcett’s Positive Behaviour Support parent training program for families of young children with Down syndrome. She has worked as a behaviour consultant providing support to children and youth in a variety of settings. She is enthusiastic about family-centered positive behaviour support and believes that a collaborative partnership with families is key to effective treatment. Dr. Susan Fawcett: Susan began her career at DSRF as the head Speech-Language Pathologist from 2003 to 2019, and helped develop the therapy, adult, and summer programs during that time. She has been thrilled to watch the therapy and teaching team and programs grow vastly since she started. Susan has particular interest in the areas of social communication, mental health and problem behaviour in people with Down syndrome, as well as giving families the positive reinforcement they deserve. As part of completing her doctoral degree with Dr. Joe Lucyshyn in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology and Special Education in 2020, she completed a dissertation project evaluating a preventative parent training program for families of young children with Down syndrome who exhibit mild-to-moderate problem behaviour. During her schooling, Susan also completed a two-year practicum with a clinical psychologist at the Vancouver CBT Centre, where she learned how to provide cognitive-behaviour therapy techniques to adolescents and adults with developmental disabilities and mental health diagnoses such as depression and anxiety.
PURCHASE NOTEContributions to the Zeffy fundraising platform are automatically included to the total of your order, however, please note that contributions are not required.
